Hybrid
This position does not require an employee to be onsite full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite monthly.
The Role
The Staff Component Validation Engineer is the technical owner for ensuring assigned hardware meets all GM technical, reliability, regulatory, and program requirements through robust analysis, development, and validation. The role requires the candidate to lead the creation of and approval of component validation strategy and plans (ADVP&R/VCRI), reviews and approves supplier validation, and drives issue resolution through DV/PV and VTC/VDC milestones. At the staff level, this position also provides technical leadership and mentorship, and helps shape validation processes and standards across programs and regions.
What You'll Do:
Validation planning & SOR ownership
• Serve as the GM Validation Engineer / Component Validation Engineer for assigned components, responsible to ensure the ECU design is fully validated to the Statement of Requirements (SOR) and associated technical specifications.
• Own validation content for SOR Appendices (e.g., G2, G3, G5/G6 where applicable), obtaining the appropriate global templates and commodity-specific content and attaching them to the SOR package.
• Obtain and maintain the latest released commodity/feature/system VCRI and use it as the starting point to develop the Program-Specific ADVP&R (Analysis, Development, Validation Plan & Report) for the component; attach to the SOR as required.
Component validation strategy & execution
• Develop, maintain, and approve the component ADVP&R / validation plan, including analysis, DV, PV, environmental (GMW3172), software (if applicable), and any special/regulatory testing needed for the component.
• Define DV and PV completion criteria, sample quantities, and timing aligned with GVDP milestones (DV-IV, PV, VTC, VDC, SORP) and program build events.
• Where analytical methods are proposed instead of physical tests, review and approve analytical validation approaches and ensure they are captured in the Program-Specific ADVP&R and VCRI.
• Align detailed pass/fail criteria, validation system E2E architecture (DUT – Tester- Report-Lab)
Supplier engagement & test plan approval
• Review and assess supplier validation and environmental test plans (if changed by supplier), test facility capability (e.g., accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025/A2LA), and test procedures; request revisions as needed to meet GM requirements before granting approval.
• Provide guidance to suppliers on component quantities and timing for DV, PV, and production validation builds; coordinate material requests and ensure that validation needs across all GM functions (Safety, Vehicle Performance, Engineering, Marketing, etc.) are considered.
• Request and review full test reports and incident reports, ensuring that non-conformances are documented, root causes identified, and corrective actions driven to closure.
Cross-functional integration & issue resolution
• Work closely with Hardware Design Engineer, Design Release Engineers (DREs), Technical Integration Engineers (TIEs), Performance Engineers, Program Teams, BOM Family Owners, Validation Owners, and Technical Specialists to define validation scope, manage changes, and ensure alignment to program targets and timing.
• Support or lead DFMEA/DRBFM, design reviews, DRBTRs, and other technical forums, ensuring validation learnings are fed back into design and test plans.
• Lead or support problem resolution for validation failures, including test-to-failure analysis, Weibull analysis (where applicable), and redesign/test-plan updates.
Documentation, compliance, and best practices
• Ensure traceable program documentation for validation: ADVP&R, VCRI, test plans, test reports, validation scorecards (e.g., CG1801), and regulatory evidence are complete, current, and stored per GM record management standards.
• Verify that validation plans and results address applicable regulatory and safety requirements for the component and that these are reviewed in the appropriate peer reviews and program gates.
• Apply and help evolve GM validation best practices and standards (e.g., GMW3600, GMW3172, component CVP/CVP in CEMENT, Appendix G-series processes).
Staff-level leadership
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior Validation Engineers, DREs, and suppliers in interpretation of GM validation standards, VCRI/ADVP&R development, and test methods.
• Represent component validation in cross-functional governance forums (PDTs, design/validation reviews, change control) and act as the escalation point for validation risk and trade-off decisions.
• Identify and drive process improvements in validation planning, data usage (e.g., surrogate data, analytical methods), and use of tools/databases (CEMENT, CICVAD, Jira, etc.) to improve efficiency and robustness.
What You'll Need:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or related Engineering discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
• Significant experience in component validation, design release, or related hardware roles within automotive or similar safety-/reliability-critical industries.
• Demonstrated experience with GM engineering processes such as GVDP, VeSCoM, PRTS, PCCR/ECR, and program milestone execution.
• Hands-on experience planning and executing DV/PV testing, including environmental validation per GMW3172 and development of component Validation Plans (CVP/ADVP&R).
• Strong background in DFMEA/DRBFM, root cause analysis, and test-to-failure / reliability demonstration methods.
• Proven ability to work with suppliers and cross-functional teams across global regions, including negotiating/aligning on validation plans, timing, and resource needs.
• Excellent technical communication skills (written and verbal), including clear documentation of validation plans, test results, and technical recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience as a Component Validation Engineer (CVE), Validation Engineer, Design Release Engineer, or equivalent at GM (components with significant electronics/software content are a plus).
• Familiarity with GM validation/supporting systems and standards, such as CEMENT, CICVAD, CG1746 Appendix G2, G5, G6, CG2999/CG3000/CG4422, GMW3172, GMW3600.
• Experience with CAN/Ethernet diagnostics and tools, or with component software verification/validation where components include embedded software.
• DFSS, Red X, or similar problem-solving / quality certifications.
• Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives and influence validation strategy beyond own component or program.
