Staff Physician Fellow

Medicine, Structural Interventional Cardiology

Overview:

The University of Miami, UHealth is pleased to offer a one-year non-ACGME Structural Heart Fellowship. This advanced training program is designed for physicians who have completed general cardiology fellowship training and are seeking specialized expertise in the diagnosis and management of complex structural heart disease.

The fellowship provides comprehensive, high-volume, hands-on experience in transcatheter and surgical structural heart interventions, multimodality imaging guidance, and longitudinal care of patients with valvular and other structural cardiac conditions.

Objectives:

The Structural Heart Fellowship at UHealth aims to provide advanced clinical and procedural training in the evaluation and treatment of structural heart disease. Fellows will develop expertise in patient selection, procedural planning, intraprocedural management, and post-procedural care for patients undergoing transcatheter and surgical structural heart interventions.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Training:

  • Participate in daily clinical activities within a multidisciplinary structural heart team including interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, imaging specialists, heart failure physicians, anesthesiologists, and advanced practice providers.

  • Evaluate and manage patients with complex valvular heart disease, septal defects, cardiomyopathies, and other structural abnormalities.

  • Provide inpatient and outpatient consultation for structural heart disease.
     

Procedural Training:

  • Gain hands-on experience in transcatheter structural heart procedures including:

    • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

    • Transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral repair (e.g., TEER)

    • Left atrial appendage occlusion (e.g., Watchman)

    • Transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve interventions

    • ASD/PFO closure

  • Participate in pre-procedural planning using advanced multimodality imaging (TEE, cardiac CT, fluoroscopy integration).

  • Assist in intraprocedural decision-making and post-procedural management.
     

Multimodality Imaging Integration:

  • Collaborate closely with imaging specialists to interpret echocardiography (TTE/TEE), cardiac CT, and fluoroscopic guidance for structural interventions.

  • Develop competency in imaging-based procedural planning and assessment of procedural outcomes.
     

Research and Academic Development:

  • Engage in clinical, outcomes-based, and translational research related to structural heart disease and transcatheter therapies.

  • Participate in clinical trials and registries.

  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and present research at regional and national meetings.
     

Multidisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Participate in weekly Structural Heart Conferences and Heart Team meetings.

  • Contribute to shared decision-making and evidence-based treatment planning.
     

Quality Improvement and Program Development:

  • Gain experience in outcomes tracking, registry participation (e.g., TVT Registry), quality metrics, and program growth initiatives.

  • Participate in protocol development and performance improvement efforts within the Structural Heart Program.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • MD or equivalent degree.

  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship.

  • Board eligible or board certified in Cardiovascular Disease.
     

Experience:

  • Prior exposure to interventional cardiology or advanced cardiovascular imaging is highly desirable.
     

Licensure:

  • Must be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Florida.
     

Skills:

  • Strong clinical judgment and procedural aptitude.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to function effectively in a high-acuity, multidisciplinary environment.
