Staff Engineer, Process Integration

Alameda, CA Full Time

About Us

We are Sila, a next-generation battery materials company. Our mission is to power the world’s transition to clean energy. To create this future, our team is building a better lithium-ion battery from the inside out today. We engineer and manufacture ground-breaking battery materials that significantly increase the energy density of batteries, while reducing their size and weight. The result? Smaller more powerful batteries that can unlock innovation in consumer devices and accelerate the mass adoption of electric cars to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels. We're tackling one of the biggest challenges of our time every day, and together we're redefining what's possible. Are you ready to be a part of a team committed to changing the world?

Who You Are

As a Staff Process Integration Engineer / Sr. Staff Process Integration Engineer, you work at the critical intersection of R&D and High-Volume Manufacturing (HVM). You will be responsible for developing and optimizing manufacturing process workflows across multiple products and unit operations to maximize yield, reliability, and performance. This is a high-impact role, designed for a builder who is highly collaborative, fluent in process engineering fundamentals, and is passionate about bringing new materials-based technologies to the market.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Analyze process data and defect trends to identify root causes of yield loss and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and implement robust, scalable process pathways for battery material synthesis. You will ensure these pathways reconcile performance specification requirements with the realities of high-volume throughput.
  • Ensure the seamless integration of new products and process technologies into production with an uncompromising focus on safety (EHS), product quality, and mechanical performance.
  • Utilize advanced statistical modeling and DOE (Design of Experiments) to define operating windows, set rigorous material specifications, and predict product performance, risks, and tradeoffs at scale.
  • Maintain detailed process specifications, flowcharts, and FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) documentation.
  • Coordinate across departments (Engineering, Analytics, Quality) to resolve integration challenges and align on performance targets, ensuring every batch of material meets the rigorous standards required by our Tier-1 automotive and electronics customers.
  • Lead the transfer of developed processes from R&D and/or Pilot Line to high-volume manufacturing facilities.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • 8+ years of hands-on process development and/or engineering experience. Experience in materials-centric industries (e.g., semiconductors, battery tech, specialty chemicals, or advanced composites) is highly preferred.
  • Deep expertise in and experience with methodologies used to transition products and processes from prototype designs to High Volume Manufacturing (HVM).
  • Proven track record of using FMEA and root-cause analysis to solve complex integration challenges.
  • Proficient in statistical software and the application of Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Strong ability to report technical data to both technical teams and management stakeholders.
  • B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or a related field (PhD is a plus).

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection on a daily basis
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
  • Move items up to 50 lbs with the assistance of lift equipment and carts
  • Move long distances (such as from building to building) and be stationary for extended periods of time
  • Reach low shelves or items on the floor
  • Enter spaces narrower than 3 feet
  • Climb stairs or over containment walls
  • Precise and repetitive handling of a range of material quantities
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment, such as a laptop, copier/printer, etc in a fixed location
  • Travel as needed to manufacturing sites, up to 10% of time

The starting base pay for this role is between $172,000 and $218,000 at the time of posting. The actual base pay depends on many factors, such as education, experience, and skills. Base pay is only one part of Sila’s competitive Total Rewards package that can include benefits, perks, equity, and bonuses.  The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. #LI-Onsite #LI-CL
