Description:
The Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) Integration Engineer will provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) support the SLS Booster Office in the production and delivery of the SRM hardware and associated booster elements. The role provides subsystem leadership and project engineering support to integrate technical solutions, resolve issues, participate in cross-functional task teams, and ensure alignment between NASA and contractor teams. Responsibilities include facilitating integrated discussions, participating in design and document reviews, providing status on issues and deliverables.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate between NASA, the Booster Office, and prime contractor teams to achieve SRM subsystem objectives.

  • Provide SME level insight and oversight into contractor SRM system analyses, integration activities, issues and resolution.

  • Develop and maintain the technical requirements for the SRM subsystem, including coordination with the Booster Element Office and contractor requirements development teams.

  • Coordinate and communicate with other Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and Kennedy Space Center (KSC) organizations as needed.

  • Coordinate planning and execution of requirement verification activities leading to flight‑certified SRM hardware.

  • Support the development and delivery of Booster Office Certificate of Flight Readiness products for SRM elements.

Qualifications:

Degree in Engineering or a related technical field is required. Degree from an ABET‑accredited university is preferred. Educational requirements are typically the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum of 14 years of experience, a Master’s degree with at least 18 years of experience, or Bachelor’s degree with at least 25 years of experience.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Experience in design, development, testing, or evaluation of solid rocket motor systems, booster structures, or related propulsion hardware.

  • Ability to effectively communicate significant programmatic and technical issues and potential resolution options to appropriate Booster office personnel is required.

  • Familiarity with the current SLS Program and working understanding of SLS Booster and SRM interfaces.

  • Experience with vehicle and ground operations related to booster integration or propulsion systems.

  • Experience developing and delivering executive‑level briefings; strong negotiation and technical problem‑solving skills; ability to decompose complex issues.

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

  • Self‑motivated and effective team player; comfortable working in a dynamic environment.

Essential Functions

Work Environment: 

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%).  Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).  

Equipment and Machines: 

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance: 

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.  Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. 

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
