Illumina

Sr. Technical Product Manager (Data Platform & BI)

US - California - San Diego Full time
What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity?

At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients.

Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible.

We are looking for a strategic, business-minded Product Manager with strong data and analytics capabilities. This person will not just execute tasks — they will think critically about business goals, challenge assumptions, and design data-driven solutions that deliver measurable impact.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in data analysis, BI reporting, and data engineering, with the ability to bridge the gap between business strategy and technical implementation. They will serve as the single point of accountability for achieving defined business outcomes and will manage and deliver solutions across AI, Automation, Business Intelligence (BI), and Software domains.

Key Responsibilities:

Product & Portfolio Management

  • Drive data product strategy by understanding business objectives and identifying opportunities to improve decision-making through analytics and automation.

  • Research best practices, perform prioritization of efforts, and proactively identify opportunities for consolidation, retirement, or new development.

  • Understand and articulate ROI and business value for each initiative.

Requirement Management

  • Understand and define the “why” and “what” — focusing on customer experience, user expectations, business outcomes, and organizational productivity.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across business and technical teams to define requirements, prioritize projects, and deliver measurable outcomes.

Stakeholder Management

  • Identify key stakeholders, align expectations, develop engagement plans, and maintain ongoing relationships to ensure product success.

Product Thinking

  • Apply strong product thinking to solution design, UI/UX, MVP definition, and user story creation.

  • Translate business questions into analytical or functional solutions and communicate results clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Product & Project Planning

  • Lead and coordinate timeline, tasks, resources, milestones, scope, and risk assessments.

  • Align product initiatives with broader enterprise efforts (e.g., EDM, ERP, and other strategic programs).

Technical Requirements

  • Serve as a liaison to development teams to convey clear business and technical requirements.

  • Collaborate with global, cross-functional teams (US/IN/SG) spanning Software Engineering, Data Engineering, BI, AI, and Automation disciplines.

Go-To-Market & Post-Launch

  • Oversee User Acceptance Testing (UAT), functional validation, and launch coordination.

  • Manage documentation, training, change management, and post-launch support to ensure adoption and sustained performance.

Data & Analytics Delivery

  • Develop and maintain BI dashboards and reports using Power BI and Tableau, ensuring data is accurate, insightful, and actionable.

  • Perform hands-on data work in data engineering, including querying, transforming, and validating datasets using SQL and Python.

  • Promote data quality, governance, and analytics best practices.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Proven experience in Product Management, Data Analysis, or a hybrid data-focused role.

  • Deep understanding of business operations and metrics.

  • Hands-on expertise in Power BI and/or Tableau (dashboard creation, data modeling, performance optimization).

  • Proficiency in SQL for data querying and transformation.

  • Working knowledge of Python for data processing or analysis.

  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills.

  • Analytical thinker with a problem-solving mindset — able to ask the right questions, not just follow instructions.

Experience / Education

  • Typically requires 5+ years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years with a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.
