Position Summary
This position is responsible for the design, development and implementation of complete software components. Designs, develops and maintains high-quality code for complex product components. Manages assigned projects independently and may serve as technical expert for issues associated with specific projects. May assist Principal, Sr. Principal and Architects to detail certain aspects of product design.
Primary Responsibilities
Create and maintain datapath software components on new and existing platforms.
Provide expert consulting to various engineering groups regarding use, test, and troubleshooting techniques of datapath components.
Write and debug hardware abstraction libraries used by other teams in F5 to control and configure hardware datapath components.
Solve issues found with datapath components during bringup and test, down to root cause. Fix bugs in F5 software components, work with vendors to get bugs fixed in 3rd party code, or isolate issue to a hardware defect.
Participates in hiring and onboarding process
Provides technical mentorship to lower level engineers
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive understanding of Ethernet switching at both physical and MAC layers. Knowledge of IP, UDP & TCP protocols.
C Code Optimization for x86-64, Cache Tuning, Inline Assembly, PGO/LTO, perf/VTune
5+ years Linux systems programming expertise in C or C++, and proficient in at least one high level language such as Python or Go.
Experience writing code to configure Ethernet switches and network interfaces under Linux.
Able to debug complex problems that span proprietary F5 software, 3rd party / open source software and physical hardware devices / busses.
Able to work with and troubleshoot hardware devices down to the register level, including new and unfamiliar devices.
Able to read board schematics and hardware datasheets.
Good understanding of Linux kernel and userspace fundamentals and how kernel-mode device drivers operate.
Comfortable working in a containerized Linux environment using Docker.
Familiarity with SCM tools such as Perforce and git.
Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communications.
Duties are performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a desk or computer table.
Qualifications
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years experience; or equivalent experience.
Board-level bring-up, enumeration validation, Linux/Windows driver interaction, performance benchmarking (bandwidth/latency), and troubleshooting with protocol analyzers
Integration of PCIe networking cores, DMA engines, BAR mapping, MSI-X interrupts

The annual base pay for this position is: $147,200.00 - $220,800.00F5 maintains broad salary ranges for its roles in order to account for variations in knowledge, skills, experience, geographic locations, and market conditions, as well as to reflect F5’s differing products, industries, and lines of business.
