Sr. Privacy Counsel

Job Overview

This job is responsible for partnering with Assurant’s Global Privacy Office leadership for drafting, reviewing and negotiating vendor and client data processing agreements. This position offers the opportunity for the right hire to take ownership and accountability for projects with developed skills/experience. This role is remote.

Job Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Sr. Privacy Counsel and Privacy Officer, draft, review and negotiate data processing agreements. (70%)
  • Monitors and analyzes emerging privacy and data protection guidance, opinions, trends and legislation related to controllers, processors, data processing agreements, etc. while consulting with the Privacy Officer and Legal to determine impact and risk (10%)
  • Advise company personnel on routine legal issues, trends, and risks related to data processing agreements.(10%)
  • Prepares risk memos/presentations for delivery to Assurant stakeholders in a concise and relevant manner. (5%)
  • Fosters strong working relationships with business leaders, in-house business attorneys and Compliance Team (5%)
  • Other projects as identified.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) required
  • Minimum of 4 years of legal experience, in a law firm or corporate law department
  • Current license to practice law in a US or other approved jurisdiction
  • Ability to evaluate complex legal and regulatory issues and recommend appropriate and defendable courses of action
  • Ability to handle a diverse set of issues and provide a high level of customer service in a calm and professional manner
  • Highly autonomous and self-motivated work ethic; demonstrating sound judgment, initiative, and an ability to manage multiple priorities with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to evaluate facts and, with some guidance, identify legal issues, locate applicable law and recommend an appropriate course of action
  • Demonstrate an ability to handle matters of a sensitive and confidential nature, and the capacity to maintain composure while working under pressure
  • Must demonstrate strong executive presence, interpersonal, and highly developed writing and speaking skills
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to build a trusting work environment

Preferred Skills

  • CIPP certification preferred but not required.
  • Experience within a privacy, compliance, regulatory or legal team involving issues related to those described herein (ideally in the insurance industry).
