Job Summary:

The Sr. Manager of Software Development and Engineering lead a team of engineers responsible for developing and maintaining Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Transportation Management Systems (TMS). This role ensures delivery of high-quality software products aligned with business objectives, while fostering innovation and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

People Leadership & Development

Hire, mentor, and develop engineering talent.

Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development planning.

Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous learning.

Project & Delivery Management

Define project scope and timelines with product managers and stakeholders.

Provide resource estimates for funding requests.

Ensure timely delivery of features and manage technical debt.

Technical Oversight

Guide architectural decisions and enforce code quality standards.

Participate in design discussions and code reviews.

Ensure adherence to security, scalability, and performance best practices.

Process & Collaboration

Improve engineering processes (Agile, testing strategies).

Drive cross-functional collaboration with QA, DevOps, and Product teams.

Lead incident response and postmortem processes.

Promote documentation standards and address knowledge gaps.

Strategic Planning & Innovation

Align engineering goals with business objectives and long-term strategy.

Identify emerging technologies and trends.

Encourage experimentation and prototyping.

Stakeholder Engagement

Act as liaison between engineering and executive leadership.

Communicate progress, challenges, and needs to non-technical stakeholders.

Build relationships with external partners and vendors.

Risk Management & Compliance

Identify and mitigate technical and operational risks.

Ensure compliance with industry standards and internal policies.

Lead efforts in data privacy, accessibility, and ethical technology use.

Minimum requirements:

Typically requires 9+ years of professional experience and 1+ years of supervisory/management experience.

Critical skills:

  • Proven experience leading large teams of software developers and engineers, preferably in a transportation or logistics context.
  • Strong knowledge of software development methodologies, including Agile and Waterfall approaches.
  • Expertise with multiple programming languages, preferably one or more of Java and RPG.
  • Expertise with back-end and front-end software development.
  • Experience with database management systems (DBMS) and SQL.
  • Solid understanding of software testing and debugging techniques.
  • Experience developing and customizing warehouse management systems (WMS) and transportation management systems (TMS).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field; advanced degrees are highly valued.

The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Our Base Pay Range for this position

$94,000 - $156,600
