The Role

The Sr. Manager, Revenue Accounting will be the founding member of the Revenue Accounting team at Cockroach Labs and play a large role in shaping the broader Accounting team.  This individual will lead the Company’s efforts to stay abreast of all its revenue reporting requirements by creating and maintaining accounting manuals and professional accounting memos as well as focusing on reporting requirements for the company as required by GAAP. They will report to the Global Corporate Controller. This role offers the unique opportunity to directly impact Cockroach Labs’ growth trajectory by standing up to its Revenue Accounting function. An instrumental hire as the company continues to scale, this individual will be expected to take on responsibility at a rapid pace.  The Senior Manager of Revenue Accounting will be on the ground floor of a newly formed function at a high-growth startup and will have significant opportunities for growth. 

You Will

  • Review revenue contracts and document revenue recognition treatment and issues in accordance with ASC 606, and internal revenue policies
  • Oversee monthly closing activities including, but not limited to, reviewing non-routine revenue transactions, performing accounting assessments, preparing accurate journal entries, and documenting revenue conclusions
  • Oversee revenue accounting operations as a key stakeholder in the Order-to-Cash cycle, ensuring accurate and timely reporting of revenue and revenue-related accounts
  • Manage the Billing team in supporting the overall growth of the company by helping to oversee the collections process, analyze all outstanding Accounts Receivable, and track cash collections performance and related metrics (e.g., DSO, etc.)
  • Collaborate in designing and expanding the Company’s financial systems; and provide other operational support to the Accounting team, as needed
  • Partner with the Financial Planning & Analysis team in forecasting cash, Accounts Receivable, and other AR-related accounts
  • Partner with Sales Operations, Legal, FP&A, and Sales on non-standard contract reviews to determine revenue impact and provide recommendations to maximize revenue and other key financial metrics
  • Ownership of key metrics for the company, including ARR and NDR
  • Assist in the continued development and scaling of the revenue accounting team by scaling the team for both domestic and international expansion
  • Identify opportunities for the design, documentation, and implementation of process improvements and increased controls to support the Company’s growing operations
  • Provide support and guidance to the sales, legal, and operations teams during contract negotiations, pilot programs, and reviews in the areas of revenue recognition
  • Assist with external audits and special projects as needed

The Expectations 

In your first 30 days, you will develop a strong understanding of our current processes and organizational structure.  You will meet with stakeholders across the organization to better understand how the Accounting team works with other functions.  You will develop relationships with other operational leaders at Cockroach Labs and an understanding of their plans, in particular as they relate to the Revenue Accounting function. You will review and provide feedback on the current Accounting team’s revenue accounting processes and the current plan for this year. You will start to identify areas for improvement in the Accounting team’s operations and processes and make recommendations on how to improve these processes.  

In your first 60 days, you will have a good understanding of how Cockroach Labs operates and continue to identify opportunities to improve the operations of the Revenue Accounting team. You will start implementing new processes to address the more immediate needs of the Accounting team, including being a significant contributor to the design of the Company’s deal desk, policies, and associated processes.

After 3 months, you'll be fully integrated into the team and have created a roadmap of Revenue Accounting projects to make the Company best in class.  You will start implementing, alongside the Accounting team, redesigned systems, workflows, and relationships with key stakeholders to fully build out an Internationally scalable Revenue Accounting function. You will have built key relationships so that you are the go-to subject matter expert in your field.

You Have

  • 7+ years of relevant experience, with a mix of Big 4 and industry experience preferred
  • CPA preferred
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, specifically with ASC 606, and other revenue-related guidelines
  • Good proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Salesforce, G-Suite, and Netsuite experience
  • The ability to design and maintain scalable processes
  • Experience managing accounting professionals
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Ability to meet hard deadlines and work under pressure
  • Knowledge of internal controls, internal & external reporting, audit processes
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential and highly sensitive financial or other information

The Team

Reporting to Waleed Kazmi - VP, Global Corporate Controller

Waleed brings over 17 years of finance leadership experience across high-growth technology companies, with deep expertise in software,  global accounting operations, and public-company reporting. Prior to Cockroach Labs, he served as VP of Finance & Corporate Controller at Backblaze (NASDAQ: BLZE), where he led IPO readiness and execution, scaled the finance organization, and implemented SOX-compliant processes. His earlier experience includes technical accounting and SEC reporting leadership roles at Visa and Dynavax, as well as Big 4 audit experience at Deloitte and EY.

A two-time graduate of UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business (MBA, BS), Waleed is passionate about building high-performing teams, leveraging AI to elevate finance, and designing scalable systems and controls. Originally from the Bay Area and now living in San Mateo, he enjoys participating in team sports, and spending time with his wife and three young kids.

The annual anticipated base salary range for U.S. candidates for this role is listed in USD below. Salary is one component of the Cockroach Labs’ Total Rewards package, which also includes, for each employee: stock options, medical insurance, vision insurance, dental insurance, life and disability insurance, funds towards professional development resources, flexible paid time off, 11 paid holidays a year, 10 paid sick days a year, paid parental leave, a 401(k) plan, and wellbeing benefits.  

We set standard ranges for all U.S.-based roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. Actual salaries may vary and fall outside of this range depending on factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, geographic location, skills, experience, and competencies. In addition, we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced (or more senior) than this job description as posted. 

Salaries for candidates outside the U.S. will vary based on local compensation structures.
