The Role:

We are looking for a proactive Quality & Regulatory Manager (level flexible to Senior Manager for an exceptional candidate) to lead our food safety and regulatory compliance efforts. In this role, approximately 70% of your focus will be on food regulatory affairs and 30% on quality assurance. You will ensure our novel ingredient products meet all relevant food regulations and quality standards as we scale from R&D through commercial production. This role is ideally based in our South San Francisco, CA office (preferred) with flexibility for remote candidates. (Note: Title and level will be determined based on experience.)

What you'll accomplish

Lead Regulatory Compliance Strategy: Develop and execute regulatory strategies for our fermentation-derived ingredient products. This includes preparing and managing GRAS notices and other regulatory filings, ensuring compliance with FDA and global food regulations, and serving as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies for product approvals.Implement and Maintain Food Safety & Quality Systems: Design, implement, and continuously improve our Quality Management System (QMS) and food safety programs. You will establish HACCP plans, SOPs, and documentation to ensure our production processes (pilot and commercial) meet FSMA, GMP, and other relevant food safety standards.Audit & Certification Management: Manage all quality and food safety audits and certifications. This includes coordinating third-party audits (e.g., SQF/BRC or customer audits) and conducting internal audits to ensure ongoing compliance. You’ll drive any corrective actions and lead the team through audit readiness.Ingredient Quality Oversight: Oversee quality control for our ingredients – from raw materials through finished product. You will set specifications for ingredient quality, implement testing protocols, and work with R&D and manufacturing teams to ensure products consistently meet specifications and customer expectations.Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as the subject matter expert guiding cross-functional teams on quality and regulatory matters. You’ll partner closely with R&D in the development stage to preemptively address regulatory requirements, collaborate with Product and Process Development on labeling and claims, and coordinate with Operations/Manufacturing to instill best-in-class food safety practices on the production floor.Continuous Improvement & Training: Proactively identify opportunities to elevate our quality and compliance processes. You will lead initiatives to improve efficiency and robustness of the QMS, and provide training to employees on quality standards, food safety procedures, and regulatory compliance to build a company-wide culture of safety and quality.
