Position Summary:

The Sr Maintenance Technician is a highly skilled hands-on specialist responsible for maintaining and repairing all machining and supporting equipment within the Fox Gainesville Machine Shop. This includes CNC lathes, mills, saw cutters, laser engraving machines, and auxiliary systems. The role ensures maximum equipment uptime, precision, and reliability while providing technical guidance and mentorship to other maintenance technicians. Senior Tech serves as a key leader in driving equipment reliability, safety, and continuous improvement across the machine shop.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance (PMs) on CNC lathes, mills, saw cutters, laser engraving machines, and support systems (coolant, hydraulic, pneumatic, and vacuum).

  • Lead troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and control issues, minimizing downtime across all machine shop equipment.

  • Guide, train, and mentor other maintenance technicians on diagnostic methods, safe work practices, and repair standards.

  • Diagnose, work with machine manufacturers and repair servo systems, spindles, drive motors, encoders, ball screws, and control boards on CNC and laser systems.

  • Conduct precision machine alignments, geometric accuracy checks, and vibration analysis to maintain machining quality.

  • Perform laser engraving system maintenance, including calibration, optics cleaning, cooling system upkeep, and troubleshooting PLC or controller errors.

  • Maintain and repair saw cutters—checking blade alignment, drive systems, feed motors, safety sensors, and lubrication.

  • Fabricate or modify parts, guards, or fixtures using manual mills, lathes, drill presses, and welding equipment.

  • Safely operate forklifts and rigging equipment for machine moves and installations.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing and engineering teams on new equipment installations, layouts, and upgrades.

  • Maintain a minimum 90% compliance rate on PMs and accurate CMMS documentation for all work performed.

  • Ensure strict compliance with all safety requirements, always including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and PPE.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on machine uptime, reliability, and cost reduction.

  • Maintain Maintenance Connection.

Specific Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required:

  • Expert-level knowledge of CNC machine maintenance (DMG MORI, Mazak, Okuma, Haas, etc.), laser engraving systems, and saw cutter operations.

  • Ability to interpret mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics.

  • Experience with PLC-based controls, servo drives, motion control systems, and HMIs.

  • Skilled in using electrical diagnostic instruments (multimeter, clamp meter, megger).

  • Strong understanding of machine alignment, calibration, and vibration analysis.

  • Capable of performing all assigned PMs and maintaining CMMS compliance for work documentation.

  • Familiar with laser safety procedures and proper handling of high-voltage and optical components.

  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship skills—able to coach and develop less experienced technicians.

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.

Position Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or trade/technical school certification required.

  • Advanced manufacturer or OEM training in CNC, laser, or saw equipment maintenance preferred.

Experience:

  • 8+ years of industrial maintenance experience in a machine shop or precision manufacturing setting.

  • Proven expertise in maintaining CNC lathes, mills, saw cutters, and laser engraving machines.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead peers and troubleshoot complex multidisciplinary systems.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Manufacturing Environment

  • Lift up to 50 lbs. regularly

  • Requires walking, standing, bending and lifting for long periods of time

  • Vision abilities required to validate and enter data on computer
