The Role:
Moderna is seeking a Senior Litigation Paralegal to support a wide range of legal and operational matters. This is an exciting opportunity to be an important part of a growing legal team within a rapidly expanding company. Reporting to the Chief of Staff and Senior Director, Legal Operations, the ideal candidate must be organized, detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple projects as a critical player on a lean legal team. The senior paralegal will assist with the day-to-day management of data, collection and exchange of complete information, communications, tracking deadlines, and handling logistics with internal partners and third parties, as well as collaborate with other litigation paralegals and team members. This role requires someone who can manage large scale cases through all phases of a litigation matter, as well as guide and convince stakeholders from across the organization of the importance of legal requirements and best practices. The position offers the opportunity to be creative and streamline processes by leveraging technology.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Assist litigation attorneys in management of litigation matters, including direction and coordination of outside counsel support as required
Guide large investigations/litigations, including Products Liability, employment matters, and subpoenas
Support and drive case management, including managing workflows, task lists, status updates, docketing deadlines, and case organization
Partner with Legal team members and business partners to manage data collection and large-scale document reviews
Oversee litigation holds (Exterro) and discovery projects, and manage and build upon eDiscovery systems (Relativity) and processes
Provide guidance and advice to outside and junior members of the team
Actively participate in and/or lead special projects, including establishing strategies, guidelines, processes, and procedures, to enable the Ops and Litigation Team to provide best-in-class service to its business partners
Look for ways to optimize the Legal Operations function, taking ownership of specific pieces and helping to educate our function on best practices
Ownership of litigation budget tracking and payment systems, identification and remediation of material changes to the budget, and work with law firms to ensure timely submission and payments of invoices
Understand how other departments within Moderna work to achieve the goals of the legal department and be able to persuade those stakeholders of key priorities for the function
Manage incoming correspondence, and draft and send responses for day-to-day legal issues
Develop content for and maintain internal SharePoint, document management software, and other Legal sites and create a process for business continuity
Provide general administrative support for the Legal team as needed
Gain general understanding of science or technology needed to better navigate position requirements
Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications):
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or college required
Minimum 8 years’ experience in civil litigation
Experience and passion in large-scale eDiscovery
Experience managing litigation case through every phase of a matter
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications):
Significant experience with patent litigation a plus
Paralegal experience at a major law firm and at a pharmaceutical or biotech company preferred
Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and a readiness to gain proficiency in company-specific systems and applications, as well as new technologies
eDiscovery analytics/TAR/AI experience
Prior use of AI tools and/or experience developing GPTs or implementing AI-enabled workflows in a legal setting
Highly organized with a strong ability to multi-task and be nimble
Proactive on making sure items do not fall between the cracks, with a keen attention to detail
Curiosity to explore new, efficient ways of working and challenging the status quo
Experience with eBilling systems (matter creation, timekeepers, approval workflows)
Solutions-oriented mindset with creative problem-solving ability
Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and ability to handle sensitive matters confidentially
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
Ability to form strong partnerships and trust with internal business partners, regardless of level, and outside vendors
Must be flexible, able to handle multiple tasks and shift priorities while meeting deadlines and department goals
Previous experience leading and mentoring others
Must be a team player with a positive attitude and willingness to provide support as needed
Willingness to take on additional responsibilities as required
