As Senior Legal Counsel, you will be a key leader overseeing complex general commercial and employment litigation, advising on employment-related legal issues in conjunction with the Assistant General Counsel for employment law matters, handling regulatory matters, and advising on compliance strategy across multiple jurisdictions. You will play a critical role in identifying, assessing, and mitigating legal and business risks, providing strategic legal counsel to senior leadership, managing high-stakes disputes, and developing scalable solutions. This role demands a strong business mindset, expertise in employment law, successful litigation outcomes, compliance strategies, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment. You will contribute directly to our mission of expanding access to clean energy and building a sustainable future.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement strategies for all pending and potential litigation, with an emphasis on employment litigation, overseeing outside counsel in high-stakes litigation and regulatory matters.
Serve as a strategic legal advisor to senior leadership, building strong, trusting relationships and providing guidance on litigation, compliance, and other legal matters. Embody our value of "We Love People" by communicating clearly and acting swiftly.
Partner with the People Team and cross-functional leaders to proactively address employment-related issues in conjunction with the Assistant General Counsel for employment law matters, ensuring compliance with evolving employment laws, and fostering a positive employee experience.
Build scalable, proactive legal & compliance strategies to mitigate risk and support business objectives, demonstrating our commitment to innovation ("We Love to Create"). This includes identifying emerging legal and regulatory risks and developing proactive solutions.
Champion Sunrun’s ethical culture and core values across all departments and markets, ensuring the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct are maintained.
Maintain a deep understanding of relevant regulations at the federal and state levels, ensuring the company remains compliant and well-positioned for growth, contributing to our drive to accelerate the adoption of clean energy.
Collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior management, board members, external counsel, regulatory agencies, and industry partners.
Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing AI tools to enhance productivity and streamline workflows, or possess the agility and "growth mindset" to rapidly master new AI technologies as they are integrated into Sunrun’s operations.
Qualifications
J.D. and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (California Bar preferred).
Minimum of 8+ years of legal experience in government, a leading law firm, or in-house with an emphasis on employment law..
Proven track record managing complex litigation, regulatory matters, government investigations, compliance strategies, and employment disputes.
Expertise in employment law, particularly California employment law.
Experience advising executives and cross-functional teams on strategic legal matters.
Strong team management skills, with a demonstrated ability to mentor and develop legal professionals.
Experience managing outside counsel and legal budgets preferred.
Exceptional analytical, strategic thinking, and communication skills.
Highly motivated, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Demonstrated commitment to ethical conduct and integrity.
This position will be hired as either a Senior Legal Counsel level position.
