PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Unix System Administrator will be responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing support of IBM Power Systems environments running AIX as well as a small HPUX environment. This role requires deep technical expertise in AIX, PowerVM virtualization, VIOS, and related infrastructure components as well as general knowledge of HPUX operating system. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience supporting enterprise-level systems, managing migrations, and ensuring system performance, availability, and security.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administer, configure, and maintain IBM Power Systems
- Administer, configure and maintain HPUX servers
- Manage and support AIX 7.2 and 7.3 operating systems, including patching, tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Perform installation, configuration, and maintenance of AIX servers through NIM (Network Installation Manager).
- Design and configure PowerVM virtualization services including SEA, VLANs, VLAN tagging, IVE, NPIV, CPU pooling, and Live Partition Mobility (LPM).
- Configure and manage VIOS (v3+) and HMC (v10+) consoles, ensuring proper resource allocation and firmware updates.
- Perform microcode, firmware, and operating system upgrades for AIX, VIOS, and Power hardware.
- Manage Logical Volume Manager (LVM) configuration and administration for optimal storage performance and reliability.
- Implement and maintain SAN storage connectivity (Dell/EMC PowerPath, PowerMax, PowerStore) and ensure high availability.
- Configure and support Veritas InfoScale Clustering for critical workloads.
- Develop and maintain shell scripts to automate administrative tasks and improve operational efficiency.
- Participate in AIX support activities, including troubleshooting, incident resolution, and performance tuning.
- Lead or support data center migration projects involving AIX and Power Systems.
- Collaborate with storage, network, and application teams to ensure end-to-end infrastructure stability and performance.
- Maintain detailed system documentation, including architecture, configurations, and operational procedures.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience administering IBM AIX systems in enterprise environments.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience administering HPUX systems in enterprise environments.
- Strong proficiency with IBM Power hardware (Power9+), AIX 7.2/7.3, VIOS, and PowerVM.
- Demonstrated experience with LPAR virtualization design and management.
- Expertise with NIM setup, configuration, and patch management.
- Deep understanding of HMC operations and LPM migrations.
- Experience with SAN technologies and EMC/Dell PowerPath, PowerMax, and PowerStore integration.
- Working knowledge of Veritas InfoScale Cluster configuration and support.
- Proficient in shell scripting for system automation and monitoring.
- Strong troubleshooting and performance analysis skills.
- Excellent documentation, communication, and teamwork skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- IBM Certified System Administrator – AIX or equivalent certification.
- Experience with hybrid data center or cloud migration projects.
- Knowledge of security hardening and compliance best practices for AIX and HPUX environments.
- Familiarity with modern DevOps and automation tools (e.g., Ansible, PowerVC, etc.).
The rate of pay for this position will depend on the successful candidate’s work location and qualifications, including relevant education, work experience, skills, and competencies.
Annual Rate: $94,000.00 - $158,000.00
