The Opportunity
This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL for the GES Global Engineering Services division.
The Metrology Engineer will provide engineering support and direction to Corporate Metrology and Calibration Services and internal customers.
What You’ll Work On
- Assure measurement traceability of Abbott products through reference standards and/or maintaining artifacts whose value can be ascertained through basic physical constants.
- Technically assess the validity, adequacy and application of new and existing equipment and instruments against customer and process requirements.
- Develop technical specifications, and calibration procedures for Measurement Standards, Measurement and Test Equipment (M&TE) and systems used throughout plant, facility and laboratory operations.
- Analyze the company's needs for internal Measurement and Test Equipment (M&TE) and Measurement Standards, suggest equipment purchases, and perform cost and scheduling activities.
- Develop and manage measurement assurance programs and processes associated with measurement standards.
- Provide direct regulatory and technical engineering support for global sites on matters associated with calibration and measurement.
- Conduct analysis of new measurement systems and test/calibration methods; manage administrative functions.
- Act as a trusted advisor and Subject Matter Expert in assigned measurement discipline(s). Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.
- Mentor others by sharing knowledge and expertise and providing feedback and guidance. Assist technicians; train others to calibrate and troubleshoot equipment and processes.
- Ensure high-quality calibration services provided from third party providers through evaluation and documented assessment of supplier. Effectively manages services and suppliers.
- Perform quality engineering functions to lead and assist with accreditation activities.
- Lead and/or participate in Out of Tolerance / Out of Specification investigations, impact analysis and CAPA.
- Manage multiple, often concurrent, projects and meets deadlines. Maintains project controls and reporting for cost, scope and schedule. Ensure safety, quality and effectiveness of assigned tasks and key project results through sound design and project management processes. conceptualizes complete solutions. Create or coordinate the solutions for complex problems; integrate regulatory and operational needs; performs cost / benefit analysis.
- Review change requests, manages and approves changes to the deliverables, organizational process assets, project documents, and projects.
- Lead and assist in the development, management and execution of validation protocols and projects.
- Participate on internal, cross-divisional teams to develop and align procedures and standards.
- Benchmark internally and externally with other divisions for continuous improvement.
- Develop key performance indicators and ways to increase customer satisfaction, improve quality, compliance and efficiencies.
- Increase awareness and compliance with policies and regulations regarding quality, equipment / instrument service, maintenance and calibrations as put forth by the FDA and Corporate / Divisional Quality Assurance functions.
- Comply with all regulations and standards for quality, Environmental, Health, Safety, Abbott Engineering Standards, and other governance areas as applicable.
- Initiate and cultivate open, honest relationships with colleagues, customers, contractors, suppliers and vendors by establishing rapport, developing an understanding of others’ needs, promoting common goals, and following through on commitments.
- Prepare written communication. Convey information effectively through formal and informal documents and presentations with team members, designers, technicians, and other personnel, both internal and external to Abbott, using appropriate communication protocols. Exhibit advanced ability to apply concepts of careful communication.
- Perform tasks, such as writing Requests for Capital Expenditures (RCEs), and coordinating with corporate or divisional purchasing for procurement of equipment and / or services.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or closely related discipline, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence, with 8+ years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.
- Four to eight or more years of experience with precision standards and measurement techniques, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of fundamental analytical, chemistry, electrical, electronic, thermodynamic, mechanical and physical principles.
- Advanced post-graduate education / degree is desired and may contribute towards the desired years of experience.
- Must understand Metrology and calibration including industry and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in the development of measurement uncertainties, including identifying the scope and sources of uncertainty, testing mathematical models; documenting the analysis and performing statistical process control (SPC) where appropriate.
- Knowledge should consist of an overall awareness of and practice with measurement principles, measurement systems, metrology statistics, measurement assurance, and metrology software.
Preferred Qualifications
- A technical background in pharmaceutical, medical devices, laboratory diagnostics, nutritional products or similar industries (preferred).
- In-depth knowledge of Computerized Maintenance/Calibration Management System, Maximo preferred.
- Interacts well with diverse groups within corporate engineering and other divisions, and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.
- Must be able to identify, analyze, and document processes associated with calibration.
- Possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.
- Works well with others in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment.
