Job Summary:

The Engineer, EHS position will play a critical role in ensuring safe and environmentally responsible manufacturing operations involving hazardous chemicals. This role will focus on implementing and maintaining compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements and ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards to manage risks associated with chemical processing and handling. The Engineer, EHS will work collaboratively and lead across operations, engineering, and management to prevent incidents, promote health and safety, and ensure environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process Safety Management (PSM) for Hazardous Chemicals:
    • Lead and support the identification, assessment, and control of hazards related to the handling, storage, and processing of hazardous chemicals.
    • Manage key PSM elements such as Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Mechanical Integrity (MI), Management of Change (MOC), Operating Procedures, Emergency Response Planning, and Incident Investigations.
    • Ensure compliance with OSHA PSM regulations and applicable local, state, and federal chemical safety laws.
  • Environmental Management (ISO 14001):
    • Implement and maintain the Environmental Management System (EMS) aligned with ISO 14001 to minimize environmental impact related to chemical waste, emissions, and resource use.
    • Conduct environmental impact assessments, waste management oversight, and regulatory reporting.
    • Support initiatives to reduce chemical usage, emissions, and improve sustainability.
  • Occupational Health & Safety (ISO 45001):
    • Support the development and implementation of a robust Occupational Health & Safety Management System compliant with ISO 45001, focused on chemical safety, hazard communication, and worker health protection.
    • Facilitate workplace safety inspections, risk assessments, and chemical exposure monitoring.
    • Develop and deliver safety training on chemical hazards, PPE use, emergency response, and safe work practices.
  • Incident Investigation and Risk Mitigation:
    • Lead root cause investigations of chemical spills, exposures, near-misses, and other incidents; develop corrective and preventive actions.
    • Monitor incident trends and drive continuous improvement to reduce chemical safety risks.
  • Training, Communication, and Culture:
    • Deliver targeted EHS training programs focused on chemical safety, process safety, and environmental compliance.
    • Promote a strong safety culture emphasizing hazard awareness, accountability, and proactive risk management.
  • Compliance, Audits, and Continuous Improvement:
    • Monitor regulatory changes and ensure ongoing compliance with environmental, health, and safety laws specific to hazardous chemical manufacturing.
    • Lead internal audits and support external audits for PSM, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certifications.
    • Champion continuous improvement projects to enhance chemical safety and environmental performance.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Safety Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years experience in EHS roles within manufacturing environments handling hazardous chemicals.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA PSM standards and regulatory requirements for hazardous chemical management.
  • Proven experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 implementation and audit processes.
  • Strong skills in risk assessment, incident investigation, and safety training development.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), or similar are advantageous.
