Tech Capability Development, Senior Director – Tech@Lilly

Role Summary

The Senior Director, Tech Capability Development is accountable for how Tech@Lilly builds, governs, and sustains technology capability at enterprise scale. This role focuses on clarity of ownership, governance, and impact, positioning GROW as a core people strategy lever that drives development, engagement, and retention across Tech@Lilly.

Success in this role is defined by strong decision frameworks, scalable capability systems, and measurable business and people outcomes not individual programs.

Core Accountabilities

1. Ownership of Tech Capability Strategy

  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for Tech capability development.
  • Align capability priorities to Tech@Lilly strategy, workforce needs, and future skill demand.
  • Partner with HR and Tech Leadership to ensure alignment with role architecture and career paths..
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Learning & Development (L&D) on learning plan management and L&D compliance/audit readiness across Tech.

2. GROW as a Core Technical Development Lever -

  • Serve as the enterprise owner of the GROW capability ecosystem for Tech@Lilly, providing governance, prioritization, and outcome accountability in ongoing partnership with Enterprise L&D.
  • Lead ELITE and provide strategic oversight and integration for the current eight GROW programs, including:
    • ELITE
    • TechUp
    • Senior Technical Development Program
    • Speed Networking
    • Apprenticeships
    • Global Ambassadors
    • ADP
    • Leadership Forum
  • Provide global oversight of technical development program execution, including:
    • Oversight for the One India GROW model (Hyderabad and Bengaluru), supported by dedicated ELITE and GROW program coordination.
    • Shaping and scaling regional GROW models in additional geographies, including Ireland (Cork, Limerick, and Kinsale), as Tech@Lilly presence and capability needs evolve.
  • Ensure GROW programs operate as a cohesive, integrated capability ecosystem, with:
    • Clear ownership and sponsorship.
    • Defined success measures and accountability.
    • Alignment to Tech@Lilly strategy, role architecture, and organizational priorities.
  • Provide strategic governance and adoption oversight of the three core GROW platforms supporting Tech capability development:
    • Percipio
    • CloudBoost
    • AI Ascend
  • Partner with Enterprise L&D to ensure programs and platforms are:
    • Integrated into the broader enterprise learning ecosystem.
    • Scaled consistently across geographies.
    • Evolved as technology, business, and people needs shift.
  • Evolve the GROW portfolio by adding, adjusting, or retiring programs in response to changing Tech capability priorities.
  • Track and communicate enterprise level impact, including participation, capability readiness, and people outcomes, to Tech and HR leadership.

3. Early Career & Experienced-Career Pipelines

  • Own strategy and governance for Tech learning needs and experiences for the tech professional journey from early career through experienced career pathways.
  • Ensure clear progression from entry level development into productive, long-term technical roles.

4. External Benchmarking & Market Alignment

  • Continuously benchmark Tech@Lilly capability practices against external market trends.
  • Leverage external partners and institutions to strengthen capability development where appropriate.
  • Ensure Lilly remains competitive in how it develops and retains technical talent.

5. Financial & Investment Accountability

  • Own budget and financial accountability for Tech capability development.
  • Prioritize investments based on enterprise value and scalability.
  • Track and communicate outcomes and return on investment for capability initiatives.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years experience leading enterprise scale capability or talent development in a technology environment.
  • 3+ years establishing governance, ownership models, and decision frameworks.
  • 3+ years managing finances and stakeholder relations.
  • 5+ years leading tech workforce upskilling initiatives across global technology organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing, leading, or facilitating multifaceted programs at large scale across multiple geographies.‑faceted programs at large scale across multiple geographies.
  • Strong partnership experience with HR and workforce strategy leaders.
  • Demonstrated success influencing complex, matrixed organizations.
  • Proficiency using generative AI, as well as data and analytics for decision making.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$157,500 - $231,000

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
