The HSE Sr. Director serves as the HSE Functional Leader for IAPI.  The role is responsible for Operational Excellence by ensuring implementation of robust HSE programs and systems in a highly regulated, complex, high hazard site. The HSE Sr. Director role includes Occupational Health and Safety; Industrial Hygiene; Process Safety; Emergency Response; Environmental Compliance, Environmental Sustainability; and Product Stewardship.  In addition, this individual is a member of the IAPI Site Lead Team and Functional Lead Teams and is therefore accountable for achieving Operational Excellence at the plant level. 

Key Objectives/Deliverables - HSE:

  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the HSE programs and systems for Indy API to ensure compliance with global and regulatory requirements.
  • Work in conjunction with Indy API leadership to create a culture aligned with the Lilly Manufacturing Outcomes of No one gets hurt and Sustainable use of renewable resources.  
  • Provide leadership / facilitation of the HSE Lead Team.
  • Ensure the HSE Lead Team complies with the expectations established in MSOE 601 – Manufacturing Site and Plant Governance
  • Manage the Indy API HSE employees through coaching and feedback, by having development and career conversations, and by providing opportunities for development.
  • Financially responsible for the Indy API HSE organization
  • Coach / influence Indy API leadership to own the implementation of HSE programs as well as outcomes.
  • Guide the HSE department and other HSE service providers to provide ownership for applicable HSE programs.
  • Ensure HSE programs are compliant with internal and external standards and utilize best practices.  
  • Interface with global HSE and Indianapolis HSE organizations to ensure programs are consistent with global and corporate expectations.
  • Ensure service level agreements (or contracts) are in place for services being provided by internal and external HSE service providers (e.g. emergency response, air permits)
  • Provide front-line interface with internal and external auditors.  Coordinate plant responses to findings.

Basic Requirements:

  • Demonstrated solid technical HSE background, with minimum of 7 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Thorough understanding of external HSE regulations and internal company HSE requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience and skill in improving HSE Management Systems.
  • Experience leading technical projects and/or teams.
  • Knowledge / experience with the hazards and aspects associated with API manufacturing.  

Additional Preferences:

  • Bulk chemical manufacturing experience.
  • Previous HSE leadership experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience relating to all levels of an organization.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, environmental science, engineering, or equivalent science degree is required. 

Other Information:

  • Certified professional HSE or engineering certification preferred.
  • Tasks require entering manufacturing and laboratory areas which require wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Supports 24 hours/day manufacturing
  • Some travel may be required

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$156,000 - $228,800

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
