Job Description:
The Sr. Derivative Accountant is a key member of the finance and accounting team, responsible for interpreting and applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) to complex business transactions. This role supports the office of the CFO, Controller, risk and trading operations, ensuring compliance with the previously mentioned standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the assessment and documentation of complex transactions including derivatives, revenue recognition, and leases.
Partner with trading, risk, legal, and tax departments to evaluate the accounting and controls impact of trading and structured transactions.
Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes related to complex transactions, including the preparation of all derivative analysis and journal entries.
Document and maintain sub ledger derivative product matrix mapping to ensure financial statements are in compliance with the applicable IFRS standards.
Perform relevant balance sheet reconciliations, analysis and variance commentary.
Monitor and interpret new accounting standards ensuring company-wide compliance.
Prepare technical accounting position papers and memos for internal and external audit support.
Assist in the development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures.
Participate in internal and external audits by providing technical accounting analysis and documentation.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Accounting.
CPA certification.
Excess of five years of progressive accounting experience, with at least two years focused on technical accounting.
Strong understanding of GAAP and IFRS, specifically related to derivatives, leases, and revenue recognition.
Prior experience in energy trading, commodities, or financial services industries is required.
Big Four or national public accounting firm experience preferred.
Excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Advanced Excel skills. Experience with ERP systems and trading platforms is required.
