ABOUT THE ROLE
Role Description:
The Senior Associate SAP ABAP Developer will play a key role in supporting Amgen’s S/4HANA transformation initiative, contributing to the modernization, development, and optimization of SAP applications using ABAP on HANA, RAP (Restful ABAP Programming Model), CAP (Cloud Application Programming Model), and OData frameworks.
This role is ideal for a hands-on developer with strong foundational SAP technical skills and a deep understanding of clean core development principles. The candidate will assist in developing and maintaining robust, scalable SAP solutions, ensuring custom code aligns with SAP’s extensibility strategy. The role involves close collaboration with senior developers, architects, and functional teams to deliver high quality, upgrade friendly, and performance optimized SAP solutions.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and maintain ABAP programs including reports, enhancements, interfaces, conversions, and forms (RICEFW) in the S/4HANA environment. Implement and support OData services, CDS Views, and AMDP for seamless data access and integration across SAP applications.
Contribute to Fiori/UI5 development for intuitive, modern, and responsive user interfaces. Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into scalable, maintainable technical solutions.
Support custom code migration from legacy SAP systems to S/4HANA, ensuring code compliance with SAP HANA and Clean Core standards. Follow SAP’s Clean Core and Extensibility principles to minimize technical debt, leveraging in-app, key user, and side-by-side extensibility via SAP BTP. Participate in remediation activities and technical analysis to optimize and refactor legacy custom code for S/4HANA.
Ensure development quality through code reviews, ABAP Unit tests, and compliance with SAP ATC (ABAP Test Cockpit) and performance best practices. Support integration of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices for SAP development, ensuring efficient code transport and deployment cycles. Maintain version control using Gitbased tools (abapGit/gCTS) where applicable.
Collaborate closely with senior developers and functional analysts to support project deliverables and technical design documentation. Maintain comprehensive technical documentation for all developed and modified objects to ensure traceability and supportability. Share knowledge on modern ABAP, RAP/CAP frameworks, and Clean Core methodologies with junior developers, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
Stay up to date with the latest SAP technologies, tools, and methodologies including ABAP Cloud, BTP services, Fiori Elements, and AI based extensions. Proactively identify opportunities for system enhancement and performance optimization. Support innovation and improvement initiatives aligned with the S/4HANA transformation roadmap.
Basic Qualifications and Experience
Master’s degree in computer science or STEM majors and 1 to 3 years of IT or related field experience OR
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or STEM majors and 3 to 5 years of IT or related field experience OR
Diploma in computer science or STEM majors and 7 to 9 years of IT or related field experience
Must Have Skills:
Proficiency in ABAP Objects, CDS views, and OData services, with experience using ABAP Development Tools (ADT) in Eclipse.
Basic understanding of SAP Fiori/UI5 application development, including creating and enhancing user interfaces using OData services.
Familiarity with SAP ATC and other quality tools for code inspection and performance optimization.
Experience working within SAP S/4HANA environments, contributing to the design and implementation of custom solutions.
Good to have Skills:
Experience with Agile/Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) in SAP development projects, promoting collaboration and iterative delivery of solutions.
Knowledge of ABAP DevOps practices, including setting up CI/CD pipelines and performing automated testing.
Familiarity with SAP Clean Code principles and experience writing maintainable, modular ABAP code.
Basic experience with SAP Workflow and automation using ABAP.
Professional Certifications (please mention if the certification is preferred or mandatory for the role):
SAP Certified Development Associate – ABAP for SAP HANA 2.0 (preferred)
SAP Certified Development Associate – SAP Fiori Application Development (preferred)
SAP Certified Application Associate – SAP S/4HANA, ABAP Programming (preferred)
Soft Skills:
Strong verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with team members and stakeholders to meet business requirements.
High attention to detail in writing, debugging, and maintaining ABAP code, ensuring compliance with SAP standards.
Ability to adapt to evolving technologies, such as RAP, CAP, and SAP Fiori, while meeting project and business needs.
Strong problem-solving abilities, with a focus on troubleshooting SAP system issues and providing practical solutions.
Collaborative mindset, working effectively within cross functional teams to ensure successful delivery of SAP solutions.
