  • NONAPPROPRIATED FUND POSITION DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: SUPERVISORY SPORTS SPECIALIST POSITION TITLE: LEARN TO SWIM DIRECTOR/HEAD SWIM COACH SPD NUMBER: 960140 JOB SERIES: 0030 PAY LEVEL: NF-04 FLSA STATUS: Exempt SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Plans, develops, supervises, administers and maintains a comprehensive swimming program for a variety of ages. Plans, coordinates, and schedules swimming lessons, stroke clinics, competitive youth and adult swim team practices. Prepares budgets. Evaluates program effectiveness. Observes all planning, organization, coordination, directions and controlling of learn to swim and swim team services, policies, procedures and functions. Protects swimmers from hazardous conditions, by safeguarding the lives of patrons and ensuring rules and regulations are enforced. Protects lives through aggressive prevention, preparedness, education, emergency medical, and rescue programs. Ensures all applicable rules and regulations pertaining to swimming pools are posted and observed. Performs water rescues and emergency care equal to the standard of training when an emergency is taking place (e.g. drowning, medical or trauma in the water). Manages respiratory and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bag-valve-mask (BVM) resuscitation, or automatic external defibrillation (AED). Abides by all First Aid standards in treatment and carer of equipment. Responsible for solving any problems related to the work environment and job functions. Deals effectively with employees in regards to suggestions, complaints, and other personnel matters. Keeps assistant coaches and swimming instructors informed to all problem areas and new methods of accomplishing assignments. Responsible for ensuring all personnel are properly trained and maintain appropriate professional certifications. Responsible for the supervision and safety of learn to swim and coaching staff. Recruits and screens all prospective staff. Supervises staff to include: assigning and distributing work, coaching, counseling, tutoring, and mentoring employees; approving and disapproving leave; recommending and completing personnel actions; completing performance reviews and signing timecards; training employees. Must be alert to alcohol abuse and take appropriate action. Assists in the training of lifeguards, swimming instructors, coaches, competitive swimming practices and recreational swimming classes. When needed, teaches various swimming skills and basic diving for various age groups. Prepares material for classes being taught. Ensures the safety of all patrons in the class. Promptly reports safety hazards to supervisor. Completes incident reports and assists in maintaining routine documents and reports. Ensures proper disposal of biohazardous materials. Ensures programs and operations are conducted within all prescribed sanitation, and health and safety guidelines. Ensures the correct use of required safety equipment and safe work procedures. Takes appropriate steps to solve problems quickly and alerts supervisor of situations. Understands the roles of the lifeguards during a coordinated rescue scene for the safety of the rescuers and the victim. Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a professional and friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment. Performs other duties as assigned. This is a mixed position where the incumbent must be able to lift and carry objects up to 45lbs independently and objects over 45lbs with assistance is required, while performing normal duties in the area. May perform work that poses physical demands beyond normal requirements during rescue. Work may be performed in settings where exposure to moderate discomforts, high temperatures, and/or adverse weather conditions while on duty.

Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 18 years old. A minimum of four years of experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of swim coaching and instruction. Current nationally recognized certification of Level 3 Performance or Level 3 Education as rated by the American Swimming Coaches Association, or current USA Swimming Coach Certification, or equivalent. Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to use and perform maintenance of competitive swimming equipment and operation systems. Ability to handle a person in the water who may panic or become unconscious. Understanding of and the ability to enforce rigid safety regulations to ensure maximum protection of swimmers. Must have a thorough and practical grasp of the concepts, methods and techniques of stroke mechanics, starts and turns, as well as skill in applying these concepts, methods and techniques to achieve established goals. Must be familiar with Colorado timing systems and Hy-Tek¿s Team Manager and Meet Manager software programs. Must be able to obtain nationally recognized certification: Lifeguard training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent and Standard First Aid or equivalent within six months of employment. Must be able to obtain Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) certifications within one year of employment. Must be able to travel from base to base and to other countries within the Pacific as travel may be required. Must be able to accommodate a flexible work schedule to include nights, weekends, and holidays. Must have valid driver¿s license. Employees hired into this position are required to complete the Blood and Body Fluids (BBF) medical certification within 60 days of their start date. This post-hire certification ensures compliance with Occupational Health guidelines and supports safe operational readiness for duties involving potential exposure risks. This position is designated as a Position of Trust, and the incumbent must be eligible for a background check. Appointment and continued employment is subject to a favorable National Agency Check with Inquiries and State Criminal History Repository Check (Tier 1) with Childcare background checks which are required for positions that involve working with children under 18 years of age.
