Salary Range: SP3, Level 5, $98,090- $115,400 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Specialist, Regional Engagement - Hybrid

The Opportunity­­

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a skilled Specialist, Engagement to join our Engagement team. This role offers the opportunity to support both provincial-level and project-specific engagement by providing thoughtful, strategic advice to project teams and by building and maintaining strong relationships with key provincial stakeholder groups. The Specialist, Engagement will lead and support group facilitation sessions with stakeholders and internal clients, anticipating reputational and relational needs and delivering timely, proactive, and responsive advice, planning, and execution. This role is well suited for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, values meaningful dialogue, and is committed to helping the AER achieve its mandate through effective engagement and communication.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Offer strategic advice on engagement, facilitation, and change management by using research, environmental scanning, internal data, and analysis of issues and opportunities. Ensure recommendations reflect the needs and interests of external audiences, including industry, Indigenous communities, landowners, municipalities, and environmental groups.

  • Plan and facilitate both internal meetings that support organizational priorities and external meetings tied to project engagement and regulatory processes.

  • Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with staff and stakeholders. Represent the Engagement & Communication branch and the AER in public interactions and support committee work by managing communication and navigating conflict between meetings.

  • Work closely with subject matter experts and leaders across the organization to support enterprise projects, protect organizational reputation, and address emerging issues. Coordinate with Engagement & Communication colleagues to ensure aligned execution and serve as a primary branch contact for project teams as needed.

  • Track engagement outcomes, identify issues or trends, apply lessons learned, and report on progress to ensure engagement activities effectively support project or program goals.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Diploma in communications, public relations, or a related social sciences discipline, supported by additional training or certificates in areas such as conflict management, public participation, or facilitation.

  • 7+ years of related experience in engagement and communication planning.

  • Professional designations or training such as a Chartered or professional mediator designation, certified facilitator status, Accreditation in Public Relations (APR), IAP2 certification, change management training, or Indigenous awareness training considered an asset.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement communication and engagement strategies that achieve measurable outcomes, along with experience advising leaders at multiple levels to support organizational priorities.

  • Experience working in public service environments and familiarity with Alberta’s energy industry.

  • Ability to assess issues using research, environmental scanning, and internal data review, with a strong understanding of the interests and perspectives of external audiences including industry, Indigenous communities, landowners, municipalities, and environmental organizations.

  • Strong facilitation skills, with proven success using a variety of techniques across diverse audiences, group sizes, and settings.

  • An enterprise mindset supported by strong collaboration skills, situational awareness, political acumen, and resiliency.

  • Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.

  • Additional training if required or provided: e.g., First Aid, H2S Alive, Driver Training.
