Supports the Day-to-Day Banking Products business/group (Everyday Banking and Personal Lending) in the effective implementation, maintenance, and ongoing administration of first line of defense (1st LOD) governance, risk, and control programs (e.g., operational risk, compliance, regulatory). Ensures business activities operate within regulatory and internal requirements while enabling efficient, customer-focused outcomes.

  • Contributes to a strong risk management culture through close collaboration with first line teams and second- and third-line partners to identify, assess, monitor, and report risks on an ongoing basis.
  • Supports multiple, similar business units with corresponding regulatory oversight.
  • Assists with the implementation and sustainment of risk management frameworks, identifying opportunities to minimize risk while supporting business priorities
  • Develops and supports risk mitigation strategies informed by data analysis, reporting, and business insights.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in governance and internal controls, supporting the evaluation, enhancement, and execution of control environments.
  • Builds effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and shared accountability.
  • Breaks down complex business and regulatory problems, analyzing data to generate insights, reporting, and actionable recommendations.
  • Monitors performance, identifies trends and emerging risks, and supports timely issue escalation and resolution.
  • Leverages data analytics and reporting tools to support risk analysis, management reporting, and decision-making.
  • Supports change initiatives of varying scope, including readiness assessments, stakeholder engagement, execution, and sustainment activities.
  • Monitors adherence to defined processes and procedures and supports continuous process improvement.
  • Develops, documents, and maintains business/group procedures, ensuring updates reflect regulatory or operating environment changes and are effectively communicated.
  • Tracks exception and exemption requests and corresponding approvals.
  • Supports measurable sustainment strategies, assessing industry- and segment-specific risks and prioritizing improvement opportunities.
  • Supports the execution of 1st LOD governance and controls programs in alignment with enterprise standards and guidance from second line partners.
  • Works with business/group leaders to interpret and apply regulatory and internal risk management requirements.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of Day-to-Day Banking Products strategies, products, processes, and infrastructure to identify and manage risk exposures.
  • Identifies, investigates, documents, and mitigates risks, considering jurisdictional impacts and escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Supports internal and external audits and regulatory examinations, including the development and tracking of action plans.
  • Provides input into training and awareness initiatives to strengthen risk awareness and compliance across the business.
  • Focus is primarily on the Day-to-Day Banking Products business/group, with potential enterprise-wide exposure.
  • Exercises sound judgment within established guidelines and works independently on complex, sometimes novel, situations.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

  • Typically 4–6 years of relevant experience with a post-secondary degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience supporting governance, risk, and control activities within a first line of defense environment

Salary:

$56,000.00 - $103,500.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
