This role will be cross charged to CDDS. The need for this role is in line with our mission to provide ring fenced resourcing to teams for partnering with them on their key initiatives to help drive related business outcomes. Information Architecture is one key area where CDDS product lines are investing heavily to build inhouse talent. We have been asked to partner with them on this objective which has a growth trajectory of 10 to 15 head count needs over next 15 to 18 months. Thus, making an effort to stand up data modeling/ information architecture as a competency center within Chapter of Solution Delivery and Divisional Activation team of CD&AO

Role Overview

The Data Design Engineer will operate within the Activation Delivery Chapter, with a primary focus on supporting as a key internal customer. In this role, you will create and maintain data models that enable the organization to use data effectively in support of decision making, operational efficiency, and strategic initiatives. 

You will be responsible for analyzing business and data requirements, designing conceptual, logical, and physical data models, and overseeing their implementation in close collaboration with technical and business stakeholders. You will ensure that data models are aligned with enterprise standards, scalable, and optimized for performance and usability. 

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with end-to-end data modeling, a strong understanding of database technologies and data systems, and the ability to translate complex data into clear, maintainable structures that meet business needs and comply with relevant standards and governance. 

What will you do in this role

• Analyze and translate business, data, and reporting needs into robust data models, with a primary focus on use cases 

• Develop and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models that support key business processes and analytics 

• Create, document, and help enforce data and database design standards, guidelines, and best practices 

• Validate, reconcile, and refine data models to ensure consistency, accuracy, and completeness across systems 

• Maintain and enhance existing data models in line with evolving business requirements and technology changes 

• Collaborate with data architects, data engineers, data analysts, and business stakeholders to ensure models are implementable and aligned with enterprise architecture 

• Support the implementation of data management strategies, including data governance, data quality, and metadata management 

• Define and maintain data dictionaries, data definitions, and metadata for critical data assets 

• Identify opportunities to optimize data structures, improve data accessibility, and enhance performance for analytics and reporting 

• Contribute to agile delivery teams, participating in refinement, planning, and review activities as needed 

What should you have

Strong expertise in data modeling, including:

• Dimensional modeling (star/snowflake schemas for analytics and reporting)
• Third Normal Form (3NF) modeling for transactional and operational systems
• Hands on knowledge of Databricks

• Proven expertise designing and deploying large-scale cloud-native architectures primarily on AWS, including deep knowledge of compute, storage, networking, security, and observability solutions.

• Proven work experience as a Data Modeler, Data Architect, or in a similar data-focused role 

• Practical experience with data modeling principles and methods, including conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling 

• Strong knowledge of relational database structures, data warehousing concepts, and data integration patterns 

• Hands-on experience with SQL and industry-standard data modeling tools (e.g., PowerDesigner, or similar) 

• Solid analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work with complex data and translate business needs into technical solutions 

• Familiarity with data visualization and analytics tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Qlik or similar) and their implications for data model design 

• Understanding of agile methodologies and experience working in agile or product-centric teams 

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field 

• Cloud Platforms: Strong hands-on experience with AWS and/or Azure
• Platform Engineering:
  • Infrastructure setup, platform reliability, and scalability
  • Integration of CI/CD pipelines
• Backend Engineering:
  • Solid Linux fundamentals
  • System-level troubleshooting and performance understanding
• Infrastructure as Code (IaC):
  • Terraform, CloudFormation
  • Configuration languages: YAML / HCL
• Database & Data Skills:
  • SQL (Mandatory) – strong querying, data manipulation, and optimization skills
• DevOps:
  • Ownership of build, deploy, monitor, and operate workloads in production

Secondary Skills (Good‑to‑Have)

• Programming Languages:
  • Python (not mandatory)
  • JavaScript or Go
• Containerization & Orchestration:
  • Kubernetes (experience preferred)
• AI / GenAI Awareness:
  • Understanding of LLMs and AI agents
  • Experience integrating AI services (not model development)
• Cross‑Team Collaboration:
  • Working with platform, GPTEL, and APEX teams
• Multi‑region collaboration experience, especially with distributed global team

Preferred

Experience working in the Merck domain, particularly within:

• Clinical (e.g., clinical trial data, study design, operational data)
• Safety (e.g., pharmacovigilance, adverse events, signal detection)
• Regulatory (e.g., submissions, health authority interactions, compliance data)

• Experience working in a regulated environment, life sciences, or pharmaceutical industry 

• Exposure to modern data platforms (e.g., cloud data warehouses, lakehouses) and related technologies 

• Knowledge of data governance, data quality frameworks, and master/reference data management concepts
