External Field

Zayo is seeking a Solutions Engineering Intern (Transport & GIS) to support the pre‑sales Solutions organization with a focus on optical transport (wavelength) opportunity support and GIS‑enabled mapping and data tasks. This is a hands‑on learning role designed for a college student; the intern will assist with lightweight analysis, documentation, data preparation, and administrative workflows that help senior team members move faster during discovery, solution scoping, and proposal preparation. Work will be guided by experienced Product Solutions Engineers/Architects and GIS analysts.

Responsibilities:

Sales & Pre‑Sales Support (Entry Level)

  • Help assemble customer‑ready artifacts (slides, map snippets, simple diagrams) for internal reviews and external meetings using existing templates and prior designs

  • Track and consolidate technical Q\&A and action items from discovery calls; route to the right owner and follow up to closure

  • Assist with RFP/RFQ response prep by gathering standard collateral, past responses, and baseline data for senior reviewers—no independent authorship of complex sections.

Transport (Wavelength) Support

  • Pull reference solution data (service definitions, standard options) and organize vendor BOM placeholders or catalog IDs for senior review.

  • Maintain checklists and trackers for complex transport opportunities (milestones, dependencies, handoffs to Product/Engineering/Operations).

GIS / Mapping & Data Tasks

  • Produce basic map exports and data extracts (e.g., KMZ/CSV from approved tools) to support opportunity visualization; update simple layers, labels, and symbology per guidance. Compile address lists, route notes, and attribute tables from internal sources (e.g., Salesforce tasks or email requests) into clean worksheets for analysis.

  • File and version map images and datasets to shared locations; keep naming, metadata, and folder structure consistent.

Solutions Architecture Website & Documentation Repository Support (New)

  • Review the Product Solutions Architecture Website to confirm all technical documents, reference guides, processes, and templates remain accurate, current, and accessible.

  • Identify outdated diagrams, deprecated processes, or broken links; document issues and assist in executing updates.

  • Tag, categorize, and version documentation according to internal standards for technical repositories.

  • Work with PSA team members, Product, and Engineering to validate necessary changes or escalate items for SME updates.
(Supports the PSA documentation, process management, and cross‑team collaboration responsibilities.)

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Coordinate with Sales, Product Management, Engineering, and Operations to gather inputs and ensure clean handoffs on assigned tasks.

  • Capture process improvements (template tweaks, checklist updates) that reduce rework across the team.

Documentation & Administration

  • Keep status logs, trackers, and document repositories current (versioning, permissions, links).

  • Prepare meeting notes, recap emails, and task summaries for senior engineers/architects.

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate student (e.g., Engineering, Geography/GIS, Information Systems, or related field).

  • Comfort with MS Office/Google Workspace (Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets, PowerPoint/Slides) and basic file management in shared drives.

  • Familiarity with basic networking concepts (high‑level understanding of what transport/wavelength services are) and strong organizational skills.

  • Detail‑oriented; able to follow templates and checklists and manage multiple small tasks to deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Introductory exposure to GIS tools (e.g., ESRI/ArcGIS, Google Earth/Maps, or MapInfo) for simple map viewing and exports.

  • Interest in optical transport or pre‑sales solution engineering; prior teamwork experience on technical projects.
