Workflow Development Engineer, Senior Associate
Job Description
Design, build, and run workflow-driven applications and reusable components that enable scalable, configurable, and auditable business processes across enterprise platforms. You will work on modern workflow engines and full-stack applications to support long-running, user-interactive workflows, with strong emphasis on performance, reliability, and extensibility.
You will partner closely with Product Owners, Architects, Platform Engineering, and Client Implementation teams to deliver production-grade workflow solutions that support both core platforms and client-specific implementations.
Key Responsibilities
Design and build workflow-centric applications and shared components, including:
- End-to-end business workflows using Appian or other workflow engines, supporting long-running, stateful, and user-driven processes
- Workflow orchestration and integration with backend services, external systems, and event-driven architectures
- Reusable workflow patterns, sub-processes, and validation frameworks to improve consistency and delivery efficiency
Develop full-stack solutions where applicable, including:
- Backend services and APIs to support workflow execution, validation, and integrations
- Data models and persistence strategies optimized for workflow state, history, and auditability
- Frontend/UI components that deliver clear, intuitive user experiences for task processing, reviews, and approvals
Contribute to platform and system-level capabilities, including:
- API design and integration (REST / event-driven) to connect workflows with upstream and downstream systems
- Kafka-based event publishing and consumption for asynchronous workflow triggers and status propagation
- Configuration-driven designs to reduce hard-coding and improve flexibility across clients and regions
Ensure production readiness and operational excellence by:
- Designing workflows and services with performance, scalability, and resiliency in mind
- Implementing logging, monitoring, and error-handling strategies to support troubleshooting and SLA commitments
- Participating in code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines to maintain high engineering standards
- Collaborating with architects to ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture principles and security requirements
- Supporting production issues and incident analysis related to workflow execution and integrations
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with Appian development or equivalent experience with modern workflow engines
- Solid backend development experience using Java and/or other JVM-based languages
- Strong understanding of workflow concepts, including long-running processes, human-in-the-loop tasks, state management, and exception handling
- Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs, with attention to versioning, backward compatibility, and performance
- Strong skills in data modeling, including relational databases and workflow-centric data structures
- Experience integrating with external systems and services in enterprise environments
Preferred / Plus
- Full-stack development experience (backend + UI), including workflow task UIs and business-facing screens
- Hands-on experience with Kafka or event-driven architectures
- Experience in UI/UX design for enterprise workflow applications, with a focus on usability and clarity
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern DevOps practices
- Experience working in financial services environments
- Exposure to cloud-native deployments (AWS, Azure, OCI, etc.)
What We Value
- Strong engineering judgment with a focus on maintainability, performance, and scalability
- Ability to balance platform-level design with client-specific delivery needs
- Clear communication and collaboration with product, architecture, and implementation teams
- A proactive mindset toward improving developer productivity and system quality
