We are seeking individuals to join our team of talented IT professionals who share never-ending passion and an unwavering focus on our customer experience. Team members comfortable working in an agile, fast-paced, and delivery-focused environment thrive in our environment where we value an entrepreneurial spirit and those who challenge the status-quo.

Unum is changing, and we’re excited about what’s next. Join us.

General Summary:

Our engineering team plays a pivotal role within the Digital Transformation Organization, ensuring accurate, effective, and timely payment of claims and supporting the integrity of downstream reporting, taxation, and data audits. We build and maintain the systems that power critical payment workflows, integrate with multiple internal platforms, and modernize legacy components while driving new solution development.

The ideal candidate is an eager learner who thrives in a collaborative environment, understands the importance of reliable payment systems, and approaches software engineering as a continuous learning journey. You will work across a mix of backend development, API integration, cloud services, and production support, contributing to both existing frameworks and modernization initiatives.

Job Specifications:

  • Strong grounding in computer science and software development principles; role is not suitable for candidates starting from zero

  • Experience delivering projects in any modern programming language (language‑agnostic environment)

  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, work collaboratively, and contribute to team-based development

  • Familiarity with insurance, claims, or financial systems helpful but not required

  • Exposure to both legacy systems and modern cloud technologies

  • Databases: Mix of SQL (RDS) and NoSQL (DynamoDB).

  • Architecture: Primarily backend development, APIs, middleware, multi‑system integration

  • Cloud: AWS with integrations into on‑prem systems

  • CI/CD: GitHub (evolving with broader DTO tooling).

  • Testing: Postman, Playwright, Qyrus

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop backend services, APIs, middleware, and integrations across multiple payment-related systems

  • Contribute to both net‑new development and enhancements of existing applications, including legacy components

  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and collaborative solution-building

  • Assist with production support, using these opportunities to gain architectural insight and strengthen troubleshooting skills

  • Participate in limited on-call rotations during holidays or release windows

  • Ensure systems and payment flows remain accurate, resilient, and compliant with audit and tax reporting requirements

  • Engage in peer mentorship, cross-team collaboration, and AWS learning programs

  • Work effectively within a broader technical and business ecosystem, understanding how each component contributes to customer outcomes

  • Embrace a mindset of lifelong learning—adapting to new technologies while also diving into mature or legacy systems as needed

  • Develop a working understanding of the insurance domain, recognized as a steep learning curve

  • Communicate clearly and confidently during stakeholder meetings when called upon

  • Approach solution design with a holistic, customer-impact‑focused perspective

  • Demonstrate patience, empathy, and curiosity when navigating complex business systems

  • Listen actively, remain open to being wrong, and contribute constructively to team discussions

  • Bring energy to continuous improvement, treating most work as an evolving draft that gets better through iteration
