We're building 'Citi Assist', a Generative AI assistant for every Citi employee on the planet. This is ground-floor work on a platform that will reach hundreds of thousands of people. You won't be maintaining someone else's system. You'll be shaping ours.
You'll join a team that owns its work from idea to production. No hand-offs. No waiting for someone else to deploy. As a VP-level engineer, you're expected to be a strong executor: someone who takes a problem, works out the right solution, and ships it. You'll work closely alongside our lead engineers, taking real ownership of features and workstreams rather than just tickets.
Your starting point is Citi Assist. But the role has room to grow. We're also the team that provides the platforms and guidance that help the entire organisation adopt GenAI safely and at scale. We want someone who'll grow with us, not just fill a seat.
We sit within Developer Enablement, inside the Chief Technology Office. We own our work from idea to production. No hand-offs to a separate ops team. No waiting for someone else to deploy.
Our culture runs on engineering craftsmanship. Leadership here actually understands what that means. We're proving what's possible inside a large organisation, and that means navigating some legacy alongside building the future. If you want everything perfect on day one, this isn't the right fit. If you want to help us get there, keep reading.
The team is distributed across Pune, London, and Texas. You'll work closely with engineers across time zones and partner directly with product and platform leadership.
Build and deliver across the stack. This is a hands-on role. You'll write high-quality, tested code across the frontend and backend, take features from idea to production, and be accountable for what you ship. You're comfortable on both sides of the stack and you don't wait to be told which one needs attention.
Own your workstreams. You'll take end-to-end responsibility for features and workstreams, not just individual tickets. That means understanding the problem, working out the right approach, and driving it through to completion. You'll work closely with our lead engineers, but you won't need hand-holding.
Work with data. A lot of what makes Citi Assist good is the data behind it: how we evaluate it, how we measure quality, how we understand where it's falling short. You'll build the pipelines, dashboards, and tooling that help us answer those questions.
Stay ahead of GenAI. This space moves fast. We need someone who follows it seriously, brings new ideas back to the team, and actively applies what they're learning to the products we build. If you've been experimenting with new models, new tooling, or new patterns, that's exactly the kind of thinking we want in the room.
Help the team get better. You're not just responsible for your own output. Thoughtful code reviews, unblocking teammates, sharing what you know — these are part of the job at this level. You'll also help bring on and develop more junior engineers as the team grows.
Keep safety non-negotiable. We're building AI systems inside a global bank. Security, compliance, and AI safety aren't afterthoughts. You'll build with all of it in mind from the start.
Communicate like it matters. We're distributed across three continents. Clear, direct, proactive communication isn't a soft skill here. It's how the work gets done.
You should have:
What matters most to us:
You ship. You take ownership of your work and you get it done. You don't wait for perfect requirements or a fully cleared path. You figure it out and you deliver.
You work across the stack without making it someone else's problem. If the frontend needs fixing, you fix it. If the backend needs attention, you're in there. You don't have hard edges around what's "your" job.
You find the best path, not just the obvious one. New code, improved old system, right third-party tool: whatever solves the problem. The outcome is what matters.
You keep up with GenAI and apply it. You don't just read about what's changing. You experiment, form views, and bring those views into the work. Curiosity isn't optional.
You make the people around you better. You give good code reviews. You share what you know. You help more junior engineers grow. It's part of the job.
You communicate clearly and early. You flag problems before they become blockers. You keep the team informed. You don't let things fester.
Python on the backend, with TypeScript, Go, and Java in places. Frontend is TypeScript, React, and Next.js. Postgres for the database. Everything runs on Kubernetes (Red Hat OpenShift specifically). DevOps is GitHub, Tekton, and Harness.
