The Smith+Nephew's Sports Medicine group is building an advanced Cloud-based platform for computer-assisted surgical navigation. Join us on this journey to design and develop new innovative digital products that shape and redefine what is possible in Sports Medicine.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Senior SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) to join our SW Test Team. The successful candidate will bring a demonstrated track record and experience delivering medical devices to the market and will work with globally distributed product development teams to deliver new product solutions. The Mobile Android App SDET will own functional and automated testing of a Kotlin-based Android tablet application with native C++ video and 3D rendering components. The role focuses on building reliable Espresso-based or any other Mobile UI automation, validating complex rendering workflows, and performing targeted functional testing where automation is not feasible, while collaborating closely with Native developers to ensure a high-quality, performant user experience. You will collaborate closely with Product Owners, Software developers, and DevOps engineers to optimize testing processes and ensure seamless integration of test suites into the DevOps pipeline. This leader is expected to play an active role in Agile Transformation efforts to build a high-performance product development team.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead both internal and external testing teams to ensure Testing activities meet product requirements and quality expectations.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners to build, refine, and maintain Agile product backlogs with a strong focus on SW testability.
  • Work closely with System test engineering to secure the necessary resources (equipment, personnel, lab space) required to meet Testing schedules as and when needed.
  • Designing stable, maintainable, and scalable Mobile UI automation suites.
  • Integrating automated tests into CI pipelines for continuous regression
  • Testing Android tablet applications with rich UI, workflows, and real-time visual rendering.
  • Functional testing of: User workflows, UI Interaction, State Transitions, Error or recovery scenarios.
  • Support debugging and root cause analysis functional and code level.
  • Create a comprehensive test plan, detailed cases and strategy aligned with product requirements.
  • Drive timely resolution of test-related issues by facilitating root-cause analysis and coordinating corrective actions across engineering, development, quality teams, Clinical, Marketing, Regulatory teams.
  • Maintain end-to-end traceability between requirements, test protocols, test executions, and results to support regulatory submissions and audit readiness.
  • Champion a strong quality mindset and advocate quality-first practices across teams.
  • Perform design control functions to ensure compliance with FDA, ISO, and other industry standards applicable to medical device software.

What will you need to be successful?

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in, Computer Science, Software Engineering,  • Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline. Equivalent hands-on experience in Android application testing and automation will be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Experience: Should have a minimum of min 5 to max 8+ years of experience in the following:
  • Mobile Automation using Espresso or any other related tools.
  • Hands-on experience with Kotlin or JAVA for understanding Architecture, writing test utilities, helpers and debugging issues.
  • Understanding of: MVVM / MVP / Clean Architecture patterns (as applicable).
  • Experience testing video rendering, graphics, or 3D visualization on Android tablets
  • Experience in maintaining and updating Mobile test frameworks.
  • Awareness of performance considerations like Frame drops, latency etc.

Competencies:

  • Strong problem-solving, Critical Thinking, Troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of influencing cross-functional teams.
  • Passion for learning emerging technologies and applying innovation in testing
  • Should be Android-focused SDETs or Test Engineers with a strong automation-first mindset.
  • Have experience testing complex tablet or mobile applications, not just simple CRUD apps.
  • Are comfortable working close to the code and collaborating daily with developers.
  • Have hands-on exposure to Kotlin-based Android applications.
  • Have prior exposure to regulated, safety-critical, or high-reliability products (medical, automotive, industrial) - this is a strong advantage but not mandatory.
