Social Worker (LMSW) - Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) - Full Time


At NewYork-Presbyterian, we are seeking a skilled, dedicated and compassionate Social Worker to join our Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and Cell Therapy Program’s multidisciplinary team. This Social Worker role is to make a comprehensive psychosocial and socioeconomic assessment prior to treatment, and to support patients and their families through all stages of their BMT/ Cell Therapy process, both in the clinic and inpatient settings.

Key responsibilities include making comprehensive assessments of patients and their caregivers when being first evaluated for suitability for BMT/ CT treatment, addressing psychosocial needs, providing emotional support, counseling, and crisis intervention to patients and their families undergoing these therapies, and to be an active participant in the care of patients who develop major complications or whose treatment is unsuccessful. The Social Worker will participate in patient care including coping with diagnosis, treatment, and post-transplant recovery. They will conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments to identify patient and family needs and develop individualized care plans in collaboration with the medical team.

 

The Social Worker will connect patients and families with community resources. They will educate patients and families about the BMT process, potential challenges, and coping strategies, and advocate for patient needs within the healthcare system. They will assist with discharge planning, including arranging home health service and community support. Additionally, they will facilitate support groups and educational sessions for patients and families, providing a platform for sharing experiences and coping strategies. Our Social Workers work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a holistic approach to patient treatment.

This is a full-time position working Monday - Friday

Preferred Criteria

  • Experience in Oncology Social Work

  • Deep understanding of the complexities associated with treating patients with intensive therapies such as BMT and cell therapy

  • Skilled in the evaluation of vulnerable patient populations

Required Criteria

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW)

  • New York State License as a Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW)
