Description:

The Slash Crew Operator is a shared position within the Parks, Facilities, and Road & Bridge divisions. The Slash Crew Operator works approximately six months during the summertime with the Parks Department assisting with Jefferson County’s SLASH Program, then transitions to either Facilities or Road & Bridge during the winter season for snow removal and maintenance operations on county facilities and county-maintained roadways. This position must be available to respond to

This position must be available to respond to emergencies and snow removal operations 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  

COMPENSATION:

Hiring Range: $28.45 – $30.00 USD Hourly 

Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Included but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform skilled slash maintenance operations including removal of wood, tree limbs, pine needles, debris, and organic materials from slash sites. Grind slash using specialized forestry equipment including skid loader and horizontal grinder. Haul processed material to composting facility. Ensure equipment arrives at the site in a safe operating condition. Securely load materials and all equipment, safely transport, and set up at work sites throughout the county, carefully unload materials and equipment, monitor for safety concerns, and cleanup site when processing is complete.
  • Perform grounds maintenance operations to include trash removal, snow shoveling, sand and debris removal, post snowstorm clean-up, and landscape work. Ensure roads and campus grounds are clear during snow events while performing plowing, shoveling, sweeping, and snow and ice control operations.
  • Demonstrate proficient operation of medium and heavy equipment such as chipper, chainsaw, skid steer/loader, backhoe, small tractor with plow blade, front end loader, tandem-axel truck, and motor grader.
  • Duties vary by division and include proficient operation of equipment in the preparation of slash material and wooded debris, culvert maintenance, hauling materials, assisting in graveling, shoveling, raking, sweeping, traffic control, plowing, and snow and ice control.
  • Operate a truck and trailer combination, lowboy, water truck, plow truck, and other heavy equipment in preparation of construction, maintenance, and slash operations. Understand and adhere to the rules and regulations pertaining to loaded weight, overweight, and oversize transport and permitting.
  • Perform equipment and vehicle pre/post-trip inspections as defined by federal guidelines and inspect other items affecting safe operations. Perform routine cleaning and minor maintenance, as necessary. Communicate repair needs with the Fleet division.
  • Inspect and prepare all equipment for use by performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on trucks and equipment, including fueling, lubricating, cleaning, and changing tires. Plan and request maintenance service and repair for specific equipment. Prepare equipment for specific uses by making necessary modifications.
  • Report incidents, accidents, traffic violations, damage to equipment, vehicles, and utilities. 
  • Must adhere to all relative policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the various components of the division’s safety management program are adhered to including the proper use of PPE. Ensure a safe environment consistent with regulatory and organizational requirements and needs.
  • Perform other duties, including flagging and setting up traffic control devices to ensure work zone requirements are met.
  • Keep time, activity, mileage records, and logs.   
  • Respond to emergencies and snow removal operations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and report to an assigned shop within one hour of being called.
  • Responsible for assisting with the basic development and training of fellow employees.
  • Other duties as assigned at various locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the operation of equipment and/or vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more. 
  • High School diploma or equivalent certificate (GED).  
  • Valid Driver's License for a minimum of two consecutive years immediately preceding employment.
  • Must have a Class B or Class A NTT Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement and Air Brake restriction removed as well as a valid Department of Transportation (DOT). 
  • May be required to transport and recover equipment within six months of hire date. May be required to obtain a Flagger Certification and Traffic Control Supervisor Certification. May be required to obtain Hazmat endorsement. May be required to obtain Stormwater Management and Erosion Control Certification. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment physical and meeting all applicable DOT and FMCSA requirements.  
  • Must be 18 years or older by date of hire. 
  • Must be available to respond to emergencies and snow removal operations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by reporting to your assigned shop within one hour of being called.

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Qualified to transport and recover equipment.  
  • Current Flagger certification. 
  • Current Traffic Control Supervisor certification.
