Shop Laborer

LS&I Railroad Full time

Cleveland-Cliffs, Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad in Negaunee, MI has an immediate opportunity for an Oiler/Laborer (Hostler) position in our Maintenance of Equipment (MOE) department at our Negaunee, MI location.  This role is responsible for safely and efficiently operating mechanical equipment and locomotives as well as general housekeeping of locomotives and work areas.  Our ideal candidate will be accountable for safe & efficient work and operating practices, likes to work hard, is self-driven, goal oriented and resilient.  Most importantly, will demonstrate a safety conscious mindset. This position may be seasonal based on seniority due to the shipping season on the Great Lakes - shipping seasons typically run from mid/end of March through mid-January.

Summary of Responsibilities: 

  • General cleaning of work areas, including but not limited to: sweep, wash floors, pick up and clean up scrap, clean pits and sumps, clean offices, locker rooms, lavatories, and lunchrooms in and around work areas in diesel and car shops and trainmen’s building.

  • Clean (including preparation of cleaning solutions) grease, dirt and other foreign matter from metal machinery, parts, filters and materials.

  • Clean/clear switches, as needed.

  • Fuel, sand, water, clean, wash, wipe engines and clean and supply locomotive cabs; attend fueling station.

  • Operate conveying or blowing equipment; operate degreaser and/or filter machines; clean parts and other items.  Operate mechanical equipment such as floor washers, sweepers, industrial vacuum cleaners, company fuel and supply trucks.  Operate locomotives for servicing in and around diesel shop. 

  • Load, unload or haul scrap, trash and debris. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of job-related or industrial work experience. 

  • Previous railroad experience and maintenance of equipment experience preferred.

  • Must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats and hearing protection where the Company requires.

  • Must be or have the ability to become General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) Qualified with the ability to remain qualified.

  • Will be subject to CFR Part 219 Control of Alcohol & Drug Use and CFR Part 228 Covered Service Regulations and random drug testing.

  • Must have the ability and willingness to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be eligible to be insured under the LS&I vehicle insurance company.

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.

  • Demonstrates good judgement, professionalism, strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative style. 

  • Demonstrates high integrity, tact and a positive attitude.

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). 

  • Must practice safe work habits to prevent on the job accidents and injuries.  Must make the prevention of job accidents and injuries a priority.

  • LS&I Railroad operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.  You will be required to work various shifts, overtime, holidays and weekends, as a fill-in when needed and in all weather conditions.

  • A TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Card) may be required after hire.

  • Ability to safely perform heavy physical labor lift/carry and push/pull, reach, lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally.  Bend/Stoop, stand or sit for more than half the workday with the opportunity to change positions periodically.

  • Ability to safely work with basic power and hand tools and ability to work in confined spaces.

  • Must be willing and able to work, on and around large moving and rotating heavy equipment such as rail cars, locomotives and cranes.

  • Mobility required; bending, twisting, turning, climbing.  Must be willing and able to climb ladders and/or scaffolding, walk on uneven surfaces, frequently climbing on/off equipment in all weather conditions.

  • Exposed to noise, dust, dirt, heights and vibrations

  • Must be able to visually distinguish color signal aspects and with training, distinguish auditory signals.

  • Must be available to work 365 days a year, full-time, subject to overtime, on call, alternating shifts, nights, weekends and holidays.
