Job Summary: This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Senate Office Buildings, Division Director Tenant Services Division, Sheet Metal Section. As a Sheet Metal Mechanic leader, works side by side with other Sheet Metal Mechanics to relay instructions, set work pace, set standards, demonstrate proper work methods, and advise other workers to follow instructions received from supervisors.

Major Duties:

  • The tour of duty for the position is Monday - Friday 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This is an Essential-Employee Position. The employee will be required to report to work during emergencies AND inclement weather situations. Work schedule may require some occasionally mandatory overtime on holidays AND weekends. The individual selected for this position will: Work Leader: Instructs and distributes immediate tasks to the individual group members while setting the pace; demonstrate proper work methods, ensuring that needed plans, blueprints, materials and tools are available. Maintain current knowledge on procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives. Ensures there is enough work to keep work crew busy and checking work while in progress and when finished. Reports to supervisors on status and progress of work and answering supervisors' questions on overall work operations and problems. The Work Leader leads at least 3 Sheet Metal Branch employees. Plans and Performs Sheet Metal Work: Checks sheet metal systems to determine component faults and to identify sheet metal pattern requirements. Lays out and develops templates to construct, assemble, and install irregular items and systems. The sheet metal items and systems used by sheet metal mechanics at this level have various combinations of features including: cornices, canopies, transition elbows and oblique, truncated or frustum cones. Evaluates damage and/or wear to sheet metal components and systems. Disassembles, repairs, fabricates, assembles and installs sheet metal components. Uses various measuring tools to measure size, angles and patterns for repair, replacement and/or modification. Plans and lays out templates for construction and repair of components for heating, ventilation and air conditioning duct work, kitchen equipment and exhaust hoods and copper roof components. Repairs copper roofs as required. Traces leaks and removes old roofing to determine source of leaks. Replaces sheathing, boards, beams and joists. Replaces cracked sections of roofing. Fabricates, installs, removes, repairs and adjusts movable metal partitions and room dividers. Works with stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium alloys and honeycomb materials. Uses hand and power tools and machines such as sliproll forming machines, box and pan brakes, crimpers, rotary machines with extra forming rolls and beading machines.

Qualifications: You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position. Experience in leading employees performing sheet metal mechanic work. (Ex metal fabrication/raw material)
