The primary purpose of this position, SHEET METAL MECHANIC LEADER (AIRCRAFT), WL-3806-10, is to lead 3 or more workers to accomplish trades and/or labor work on a substantially full-time and continuing basis. Is responsible for performing the work assigned by a supervisor and ensures that subordinates completed assigned work consistent with trades and labor standards.

Major Duties:

  • Lead a team of trades and/or labor workers. Perform nonsupervisory trades and/or labor work that is usually of the same kind and level as members of the work crew led. Periodically check Supply Materials and Equipment, ensuring needed supplies and equipment are available to accomplish work assignments along with managing the Tool Control Program. Ensure that he crew abides by all rules, regulations, and policies established by higher authority relative to safety, security, fire prevention, training, and good housekeeping.

Qualifications: In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WL-3800 - Metal Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is Ability To Lead or Supervise JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of Equipment, Structure, Materials, etc. (includes constructing repair, and forging). Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Layout and Pattern Development (includes Geometric Projection and Triangulation) Ability to Use Hand Tools, Power Tools, etc., for Metal Work Dexterity (Assembly Disassembly Reassembly etc) PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Heavy lifting (25 pounds and over) and heavy carrying with assistance. Frequently lifts equipment weighting 25 pounds or less without assistance and occasionally items weighting more than 25 pounds with help from lifting equipment or other workers. Hours of straight pulling are 1 per day. Hours of pulling hand over hand are 1 per day. Pushing hours are 1 per day. Reaching above shoulder. Use of fingers. Both hands required. Walking are 2 per day. Standing are 2 hours per day. Crawling for 30 minutes a day. Kneeling 1 hour per day. Repetitive bending for 30 minutes per day. Climbing use of legs and arms. Both legs required. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13 inches to 16 inches to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Depth perception needed. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Apply hearing standard. Regularly stoops, climbs ladders, bends, stretches, and works in cramped, tiring, and uncomfortable positions while using hand and powered tools. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work both inside and outside and is subjected to a moderate amount of noise and vibration from shop machines and to a variety of weather conditions and temperatures. Subject to exposure of solvents, degreasing agents, sealants, grease, oils, fuels, and purging oils. Works in shop area around electrical energy, machinery with moving parts, and moving objects or vehicles. Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. May work in confined spaces and work on aircraft surfaces above ground 15 or more feet. Employee must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, coveralls, gloves, and ear protection.
