As a Shared Laboratory Resource Specialist IV - Medical Prototype Machinist, you will independently perform a wide range of laboratory activities that require advanced technical expertise while serving as a key resource for operational support and research partners. This position is part of the Prototype Mechanical Core, where you will setup and operate manual and CNC machining equipment, and ensure precision fabrication to support research and clinical needs. In this role, you will apply strong problem-solving skills that support evolving laboratory and machine shop operational needs to ensure a high-quality, efficient, and reliable service.

A caregiver in this position works days from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Machine and fabricate experimental prototype and rehabilitation devices under supervision of the Manager.
  • Set up and perform precision machining, using a manual mill, manual lathe, horizontal and vertical bandsaw, drill press, and other manual machines.
  • Inspect and repair medical devices.
  • Operate profile projector and other inspection instruments.
  • Perform sheet metal work-layout, shearing and bending of aluminum and stainless steel.
  • Participate in the design and development of prototype devices.
  • Perform woodworking using table saw and other hand tools.
  • Operate paint spraying equipment, and other finishing tools.
  • Participate in testing of new protocols and services as appropriate for working area.  
  • Ensure that all work is accurate and completed/documented.
  • Ensure established inventory levels and note usage trends so that inventory levels meet client demand.
  • Prepare and operate equipment for experiments, assays, measurements, etc. 
  • Ensure the recommended maintenance on instrumentation and equipment is performed according to manufacturer and Institute guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and mitigate the issues with training and/or repair protocols.
  • Recommend equipment improvements and/or new equipment. 
  • Assist in the development of usage protocols for new equipment. 
  • Execute and facilitate delivery of specialized services.
  • Abide by all Institute, sponsor and federal rules and regulations.
  • Provide training to researchers in instrument and equipment operation.
  • Interact with both Core Staff and clients in the planning and execution of experiments/ core services.  
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field and six years of experience
  • OR Master's Degree in an appropriate scientific field and two years of experience
  • OR ten years' directly related experience
  • Certification in appropriate field may be required per department or core protocol within one year of hire

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Ability to set up and operate manual and Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machining centers
  • Perform TIG (Tungsten inert gas) welding of structural steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium.
  • Experience working in Tool & Dye
  • Experience as a Journeyman machinist
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Experience with 3D modeling software
  • Experience with CNC programming software (MasterCAM preferred)

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information
  • Continuous lifting (up to 25 pounds), standing, and walking

Personal Protective Equipment:
