Job Description

Job Summary/Purpose:

The purpose of this arrangement will be to provide after hours on-call coverage for the Department of Pediatrics/Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics (CAP) as a Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (P-SANE). The P-SANE RN provides timely and compassionate care to pediatric and adolescent sexual assault victims. These responsibilities include triage, forensic examination, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, and support and participation in legal proceedings.  The P-SANE RN works under the direction of the P-SANE Program Coordinator and follows established protocols.

Required Minimum Training and Education: 

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing

  • One year of related nursing experience. Pediatric experience preferred.


Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:

  • Current South Carolina RN License

  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required

Pay Basis/FLSA: Hourly / Non-Exempt

Job Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Provide quality, cost-efficient healthcare to all patients as applicable to the assigned clinical setting (e.g. forensic healthcare examinations, treatment and follow-up services).  Completion of documents associated with clinical activities for each patient must occur on a timely basis.  This includes compliance with standards set by the Department of Pediatrics, MUSC, MUHA, UMA, payor and any other regulatory agent or agency monitoring activity. 

  • Prompt phone response to all pages from the MUSC Pediatric Emergency Department (minimum requirement is within 10 minutes of page) and prompt physical response at the Emergency Department to provide clinical services (minimum requirement is within 60 minutes of being paged).

  • Prompt peer review of every case within seven (7) days as arranged by Program Coordinator and PSANE Medical Director.

  • Provide the P-SANE Program Coordinator 4-6 weeks advance notice of her/his primary work schedule so that the schedule can be established.

  • Court testimony if required, with prior preparation by the prosecuting attorney and by the CAP team member.

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: 

  • Required- a minimum of 6 on call shifts per 4-week block (4 weeknight, 2 shifts on weekends (Fri/Sat Night or Sat/Sun day)  

  • Required- 2 on call shift minimum for MUSC recognized Summer and Winter holidays.

  • Shift needs (Day/Night) to be discussed with the Program Coordinator

Initial Training Expectations (Orientation 4-6 months)

  • 40 hr online self-paced training program (to be completed within 1 month)

  • 1-2 days in Outpatient CAP clinic, if indicated.

  • 2-3 In-Person Trainings with CAP NP/Program Coordinator

  • Monthly PSANE educational meetings (4 per year)

  • Simulations with PSANE Coordinator

Additional Job Description

Maintaining Competency:

  • Monthly PSANE educational meetings (4 per year)

  • Simulations with PSANE Coordinator/NP every 3-4 months if indicated

  • Monthly video update attendance and attestation
