Job Summary:

The Service Technician Role is responsible for the hands-on evaluation, diagnosis, repair, alignment, testing, and documentation of customer-returned (RMA) opto-mechanical systems. Working closely with the Service and Support Supervisor, the technician performs initial inspections, troubleshoots optical and mechanical issues, executes repairs, conducts final optical testing/alignment, and prepares units for return shipment. This role combines strong opto-mechanical assembly skills with optical testing expertise in a fast-paced RMA environment.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment in compliance with procedures, rules, and regulations.

  • Receive and perform initial inspection of returned RMA units, documenting condition, serial numbers, reported issues, and cosmetic/mechanical damage.

  • Evaluate and diagnose root cause of failures using interferometry, alignment telescopes, optical inspection devices, and standard metrology tools (micrometers, calipers, height gages, dial indicators, torque wrenches, etc.).

  • Disassemble, repair, and reassemble opto-mechanical systems in accordance with assembly drawings, process documents, and repair procedures.

  • Perform optical alignment and final performance testing of repaired units using interferometry and other optical test equipment to verify units meet original specifications.

  • Conduct environmental stress screening (thermal chambers, vibration tables) when required to verify repair effectiveness.

  • Generate detailed repair reports and photographic documentation for quotes and customer communication.

  • Package repaired units to prevent shipping damage and prepare for return shipment.

  • Maintain accurate RMA log entries and support weekly RMA status meetings.

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience in opto-mechanical assembly and optical testing required (optics or photonics industry strongly preferred).

  • Optical alignment and test experience utilizing interferometry, alignment telescopes, autocollimators, and related equipment desired.

  • Strong mechanical assembly skills with ability to read complex assembly drawings, bills of material, and process instructions.

  • Experience troubleshooting opto-mechanical systems and performing root-cause failure analysis desired.

  • Proficiency with standard hand tools and precision measuring instruments (torque wrenches, allen wrenches, screwdrivers, calipers, micrometers, height gauges, dial indicators).

  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision while also collaborating effectively in a small team.

  • Excellent attention to detail, quality-focused work ethic, and commitment to accurate documentation.

  • Ability to handle time-sensitive repairs while maintaining high quality standards.

  • Familiarity with ITAR requirements and ability to work in a controlled, export-compliant environment.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods, often for most of the workday.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects, often up to 45 pounds, though the frequency of lifting heavier objects varies.

Salary Range:

$50,600.00-$67,500.000
