The Underwriter III (Senior Underwriter) is responsible for independently evaluating, selecting, pricing, and managing complex commercial risks within assigned programs and authority levels. This role serves as a technical resource to underwriting staff, supports portfolio performance objectives, and contributes to program profitability through disciplined underwriting, broker engagement, and risk analysis. The position also provides mentorship to junior underwriting staff and supports strategic underwriting initiatives.

The Underwriter III (Senior Underwriter) is responsible for independently evaluating, selecting, pricing, and managing complex commercial risks within assigned programs and authority levels. This role serves as a technical resource to underwriting staff, supports portfolio performance objectives, and contributes to program profitability through disciplined underwriting, broker engagement, and risk analysis. The position also provides mentorship to junior underwriting staff and supports strategic underwriting initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently review, analyze, quote, and bind new and renewal business within delegated authority
  • Evaluate complex submissions including loss history, operational exposures, financials, and regulatory considerations
  • Apply underwriting guidelines to maintain portfolio profitability and compliance with program structure and reinsurance requirements
  • Identify adverse trends and recommend corrective underwriting actions
  • Manage broker relationships and act as a senior point of contact for assigned agents and partners
  • Support referrals to carrier partners and reinsurers as required
  • Mentor Underwriting Assistants and Underwriters I–II on risk selection, pricing approach, and file quality
  • Participate in underwriting audits and portfolio reviews
  • Assist with development and refinement of underwriting guidelines, workflows, and best practices
  • Support program growth initiatives while maintaining underwriting discipline
  • Coordinate with claims, actuarial, compliance, and reinsurance teams as needed
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation within policy systems

Qualifications

  • 5–10 years of commercial underwriting experience (transportation or specialty programs preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex risks independently
  • Experience working within delegated authority environments and structured programs
  • Strong understanding of coverage forms, rating considerations, and regulatory requirements
  • Proven ability to manage broker relationships and negotiate terms effectively
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • CPCU or progress toward designation preferred
