Project Description:
St. Jude is seeking a seasoned Rust developer to lead the development of software to facilitate genomics analysis at scale. Foundationally, this position will work on writing (or rewriting) tools that underpin the genomics ecosystem in Rust. This position requires a deep understanding of the Rust programming language and agility working with the core concepts therein, proficiency in algorithm development with a focus on optimization via profiling, and a track record of developing software with strong documentation and testing. A portion of this position’s time will be dedicated to open-source software development: for these projects, active community management and engagement are vital to ensuring adoption of these tools. Beyond engineering, both synchronous and asynchronous communication skills—particularly in the areas of ideating on project direction, tracking project progress, and overall engagement with the community of these tools—are critical to ensuring success of the project. Principal Software Engineer Job Responsibilities:

The Senior Software Engineer develops software used in big data analysis as part of a team of scientists and engineers at the forefront of research into catastrophic childhood disease. Provides solutions through a combination of implementing/modifying available tools and developing novel methods and software tools.
Job Responsibilities:
Perform the detailed design, coding, testing, and documentation of software utilizing established design/code standards and to the architectural patterns outlined by the development team
Independently identify and implement solutions to simple domain problems
Modify and maintain existing systems for adaptation to business and/or technology changes
Provide subject matter expertise for production systems, document maintenance, and system support procedures
Support continuous improvement by investigating alternatives and new technologies and presenting these for architectural review
Determine root cause for the most complex software issues and develop practical, efficient, and permanent technical solutions
Remain current in and actively contribute to the evaluation and adoption of new methods and technologies
Serve as a resource for junior staff for questions about the technical and scientific domains while continuing to actively grow in technical and scientific domain knowledge
Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.

Minimum Education and/or Training:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, information science, business, or related field.
Master's degree preferred.
Minimum Experience:
Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of experience required.
Experience Exception: Master's degree with 1+ years of experience.
Experience with programming languages, databases, and software development lifecycle.
Experience with the position-specific technical stack preferred.
Experience with the position-specific scientific domain preferred.
Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.
Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $125,840 - $238,160 per year for the role of Senior Staff or Principal Software Engineer, Rust Genomics Infrastructure.Explore our exceptional benefits!
