About the Role
As a Senior API / Backend Engineer (Sr SWE II) at Particle Health, you'll play a key leadership role in building and maintaining the core services that power our healthcare data platform. You’ll work primarily with Golang (and sometimes Python) to develop robust, scalable APIs that enable our customers to access and utilize healthcare data effectively.
You’ll take ownership of major systems, contribute to architectural decisions, mentor other engineers, and help shape the evolution of our backend platform as we scale. You’ll collaborate closely with teams across engineering, product, and data to deliver high-quality solutions that serve the evolving needs of our healthcare partners.
Location & Work Schedule
This is a hybrid role based in New York City. The team works in-office two days per week , so applicants must be located within commuting distance and comfortable with in-person collaboration.
What You'll Do
- Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services using Golang (and some Python).
- Build scalable, secure, and performant services that handle healthcare data with strong privacy and compliance standards.
- Implement authentication, authorization, and data validation for API endpoints.
- Integrate backend services with data pipelines and processing workflows.
- Elevate system performance and implement measurable efficiency gains.
- Take ownership of complex systems end-to-end, ensuring reliability and operational health.
- Lead or contribute to architectural discussions and long-term technical planning.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to improving engineering standards, tooling, and processes.
- Partner with product teams to translate requirements into technical solutions and support customer integrations.
What We Seek
Required:
- 7+ years of backend development experience focused on APIs and distributed systems.
- Strong production experience in Golang; comfortable working in Python when needed.
- Deep understanding of RESTful API design and scalable service patterns.
- Experience with SQL/NoSQL databases and cloud environments (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
- Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and modern CI/CD tooling.
- Demonstrated ability to design, build, and operate end-to-end systems independently.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and communication skills.
- Experience using AI-enhanced coding tools (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, etc.).
- Bachelor's degree in CS/Engineering or equivalent experience.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7, CCDA).
- Familiarity with Data Engineering / ETL workflows or data engineering pipelines.
- Experience with GCP
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code, specifically Terraform
- Event-driven architectures, message queues.
- API security and authentication patterns (OAuth, JWT).
- Knowledge of healthcare compliance frameworks (HIPAA, SOC2).

Compensation Range: For this role, we’re targeting a salary range of $190,000-220,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. If your background aligns more closely with a higher or lower level than the scope outlined here, compensation may vary accordingly.
