The expertise within the team ranges across underwriting, sales and operations. We have large ambitions in this space, but these ambitions come in hand with dedicated focus to make these ambitions a reality.
We have an exciting brand-new opportunity for a Senior Underwriter – Medical Malpractice to join the Markel UK team. This role will report into the Schemes Operations Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting new business and renewal cases, much of which will be associated to delegated portfolios and will be Medical Malpractice business. It is important that this individual wants to be part of a team and enjoys developing portfolios of business. This is a hybrid working role and can be based from any of our UK office across Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham or London, we are very flexible on location for the right candidate!
What you’ll be doing:
Contribute to ambitious targets within the Schemes team, and provide support to team members by supporting workloads and sharing technical expertise
Manage enquiries and negotiate terms, with a focus on obtaining and retaining profitable business
Act as a referral point for both our broker partners and underwriting team members, managing upper tier referrals, and work to agreed service levels
Lead on the underwriting input during review and renewal conversations for the accounts, providing insight to book performance and making recommendations to plans ahead
Be responsible for the running of delegated business
Monitoring pricing and underwriting integrity
Periodic Cover holder audits and closure of any actions that may arise as part of
Ensuring quality of existing and incoming business is maintained
Be a role model to peers by consistently seeking opportunities for growth, efficiency and identifying where value can be added, across your Scheme portfolio
Build and manage effective trading relationships with our broker partners, ensuring Markel is a preferred market for Schemes business
Provide and maintain a senior level of underwriting, whilst demonstrating detailed knowledge of company guidelines and authority levels
Be a dedicated contact within the business for queries that may arise in relation to your Scheme portfolios
Our must haves:
Proven underwriting expertise, at least three years’ experience within medical malpractice is essential
Demonstrable technical and analytical skills
Experience of Schemes / delegated business is desirable
A team spirit and desire to support others technical development
Track record in building and maintaining effective broker and market relationships
Excellent communication skills
