Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Senior SCADA Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based out of 2 location in Toronto, Canada and Mississauga, Canada.
 

Accountabilities

  • Analyze customer‑supplied system specifications and decompose them into detailed functional, performance, hardware, and software requirements, while extending the requirement set based on applicable standards, codes of practice, and system interfaces.
  • Identify gaps between customer requirements and company standard solutions.
  • Create requirement documents including high‑level design documents, interface control documents, detailed software requirements and specifications, and requirements traceability documentation in accordance with applicable quality standards.
  • Serve as the primary technical interface with the customer throughout the project lifecycle and act as a technical liaison with cross‑functional internal teams.
  • Interface with internal stakeholders (project managers, construction managers, project engineers, application engineers) and external parties (customers, contractors, local authorities, external assessors) to maintain consistent communication.
  • Develop and execute commissioning plans, including resource allocation, logistics, and scheduling. Act as onsite lead for commissioning and acceptance testing.
  • Coordinate work sequences, schedules, resources, and punch list management.
  • Collaborate with all stakeholders to define and execute testing protocols required for commercial operation, based on contractual and safety requirements.
  • Oversee commissioning and acceptance testing of all plant systems, including control and communication networks, power supply, fire detection, ventilation, HMIs, and integrated control.
  • Provide local and remote technical troubleshooting support during commissioning and operations.
  • Develop training materials for customers and O&M teams, including train‑the‑trainer program development for safe plant operation.
  • Prepare professional commissioning and testing reports for internal stakeholders and external clients.
  • Drive continuous improvement by capturing technical problem‑solving knowledge and enabling efficient resolution of customer issues.
  • Fulfill administrative responsibilities, including service reports, issue tracking, job safety analyses, and quality compliance documentation.

Required Skills / Knowledge

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in transportation systems (railway, metro, tram, freight).
  • Ability to lead the design process, support in installation activities, testing (FAT, SAT, SIT), and commissioning documentation for integrated SCADA‑related systems, including:
    • SCADA Building Automation Control System (BACS)
    • SCADA Power Supply (PS)
    • SIL2 Safety SCADA components, such as Tunnel Ventilation Control Systems (TVCS)
    • CFAMS (Central Fire Alarm Monitoring System)
    • EMP (Emergency Management Panel)
    • DWH (Data Warehouse)
  • Experience with interface clarification and technical integration of the above control systems with station services, civil works, and other rail subsystems (signaling, rolling stock, power).
  • Provide technical clarification and support for installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Track and report work progress.
  • Follow internal processes for raising NCRs, troubleshooting system issues, and coordinating remedial actions with engineering teams.
  • Strict adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Coordinating with internal and external system stakeholders
    • Reviewing and developing design/installation documentation (ICDs, drawings, design packages, test procedures)
    • Reviewing design contractor and installation documentation
    • Supervising construction and ensuring technical compliance
    • Supporting interface resolution with civil, signaling, and systems teams
    • Reporting progress and identifying potential commercial or claim‑related impacts
    • Supporting FAT approvals, RAMS assessments, and complex safety analysis for integrated SCADA systems
  • Basic technical knowledge in:
    • Power distribution, grounding, wiring, cabinets, cable routes
    • Communication protocols (Modbus TCP, IEC 61850, OPC UA)
    • Motor control principles
    • Hardware/software architecture
    • Relay logic
  • Knowledge of maintenance concepts, databases, data collection protocols, asset configuration, work order management, and warehouse/spare parts processes.

Desired Skills / Knowledge

  • 2+ years of experience in major transportation infrastructure projects.
  • P.Eng. designation is preferred but not required.

  • Demonstrable experience in designing, installing, delivering, testing, and operating SCADA or control‑system‑related solutions.
  • Experience managing the delivery of integrated control systems to quality, budget, and schedule constraints.
  • Knowledge of international standards applicable to control and monitoring systems.
  • Understanding of railway operational requirements and safety principles.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical/electrical systems, system assurance, manufacturing processes, quality, and safety.
  • Familiarity with current installation practices and safety legislation.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make on‑site decisions to progress works.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience as an Electrical/Automation Engineer.
  • Minimum 1 year of professional experience in design, commissioning, or performance testing.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in parallel; highly organized, detail‑oriented, and adaptable.
  • Proven customer‑focused problem‑solving skills.

Education / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Automation, Control Systems, or similar).
  • Clear Criminal Background Check required

Languages

  • English proficiency required.
