Job Description
Rockwell's Advanced Technology (AT) research team is seeking a system security researcher to work in close collaboration with Rockwell Automation senior leadership, business units, resource groups, and peer researchers to identify, develop and demonstrate advancements in functional safety. This position works on multidisciplinary engineering problems requiring a wide range of expertise that can include electrical, firmware, software, and system engineering. Performs front-end technology assessments. Assists in the development of technology roadmaps, coordinating with business development, business leadership and other functions as necessary. Performs prototyping and demonstrations to support assessment and technology transition. Actively collaborates with business and resource technologists as a subject matter expert (SME) to support new product development and advantageous enhancements to existing products.
Advanced Technology is the corporate-level research lab tasked with a) identifying, b) assessing, c) developing, and d) transitioning advanced industrial automation and information technologies to support and influence future strategic business objectives.
You will report to the Hiring Manager and will work in a hybrid schedule in Prague, Czech Republic.
Your Responsibilities:
- Perform research and prototyping on system security problems with a focus on protocol and hardware simplification, response time and availability improvements, toolkits, simplified user experience, robust operation, and standardization.
- Perform literature reviews, hands-on prototyping, experimentation, demonstration, and documentation to support assigned work.
- Identify and document intellectual property.
- Be a subject matter expert for system security topics as part of Rockwell's Advanced Technology research team.
- Represent Rockwell Automation's Advanced Technology laboratory on appropriate internal and external committees and boards. Efforts may include national and international standards committee work.
- Perform other tasking as required.
The Essentials - You Will Have:
- Master's degree in one of the following: Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, Physics, Applied Physics, or Engineering Physics. Doctorate/PhD is preferred.
- Demonstrated at least 5 years of relevant research and/or engineering experience in system security or cybersecurity in general.
- Legal authorization to work in Prague, Czech Republic.
- Proficient in written and spoken technical English

- Experience applying security solutions to embedded software devices
- Operational technology experience desirable
- Familiar with IEC 62443, IEC15408, and ISO 27001 standards for cybersecurity in operational technology systems
- Build a comprehensive threat assessment of a given system
- Experience with C and C++ programming languages desirable
- Experience with C#, Rust, and Python desirable
- Experience hardening edge compute devices
- Familiarity with real-time control of electromechanical systems, including real-time operating systems
- Apply zero trust concepts throughout a hybrid cloud system architecture
- Understand the implementation of dependable and fault-tolerant applications including concepts related to availability, maintainability, etc. Including the application of containerization and orchestration techniques in different applications including edge and cloud.
- Familiarity with computer networking fundamentals and associated security standards.
- Early stage technology development and transfer experience.
- Demonstrated focus on relationships and collaboration.
- Demonstrated ability for abstract thought.
- Experience in front-end technology development and product opportunity identification.
- Demonstrated project management skills/PMP.
- Strong written, verbal and presentation skills – published papers, conference presentations, business engagement experience.
- Proficient in spoken and written Czech.
