Position Summary:  

Semtech is seeking a bright, motivated individual to contribute to the development of highly-innovative and market-leading high power distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor lasers and gain chip (SOA & RSOA) for telecom, AI data center interconnect applications. This position drives fundamental scientific discoveries in III-V semiconductor devices, establishes enterprise-wide research vision for next-generation wafer processing technologies, and creates revolutionary fabrication platforms that enable unprecedented competitive advantage in our worldwide operations. The role requires world-class scientific expertise in semiconductor physics and wafer processing, distinguished technical leadership, and strategic vision to advance fundamental knowledge, pioneer disruptive wafer fabrication technologies, and shape industry direction while delivering exceptional innovation impact. 

 

Responsibilities:  

  • Lead development of disruptive innovations in III-V semiconductor devices (gain chips, high power DFBs, narrow linewidth DFBs, etc). Develop a variety of high power DFB semiconductor lasers and RSOA. 

  • Key contributor in conception, planning, design and qualification phases of development projects 

  • Design of epitaxial structures, device geometries, and wafer fab processes to achieve electro-optical performance that meets or exceeds specification with production yields suitable for volume manufacturing 

  • Pioneer revolutionary device concepts, novel material systems (2D materials, III-V/SiPh integration, etc.), and advanced wafer process technologies. Photolithographic mask design and layout 

  • Test and characterization of prototypes, data analysis, establishing correlation between structure design, process & growth parameters and device performance 

  • Participating in cross-functional teams comprised of growth, process and test engineers 

  • Create substantial intellectual property portfolios through invention disclosures, patent filings, and device technology licensing opportunities 

  • Analyze global semiconductor technology trends, competitive fab capabilities, and emerging scientific breakthroughs 

  • Provide strategic guidance to executive leadership on wafer fab technology investments, research priorities, and M&A opportunities 

  • Represent scientific excellence in premier semiconductor conferences (Photonics West, OFC, CLEO) and scientific consortia 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related scientific field required 

  • 15+ years of experience in III-V optoelectronic device development with distinguished technical contributions and industry recognition 

  • Detailed, hands-on knowledge in the following areas: optoelectronic device physics, device modeling and simulation, epitaxial growth, III-V semiconductor processing and electro-optical device characterization 

  • History of successful innovative projects in designing laser diodes, gain chips, or similar optoelectronic devices 

  • Creativity, problem-solving, overcoming technical challenges by extending technical knowledge, developing new concepts and inventions 

  • Deep knowledge of distributed feedback laser diode and SOA design in InP-based material system 

  • Professional technical communication skills with ability to influence C-suite executives 

  • Deep understanding of semiconductor laser technology trends, fab economics, and competitive global landscape 

  • Experiences in transitioning proof of concepts to pilot wafer fab demonstrations to high-volume manufacturing 

  • Strong collaboration skills with ability to build productive partnerships with academic institutions and industry leaders 

  • Track record of scientific discoveries that have influenced global semiconductor industry direction and created substantial business value

A reasonable estimate of the pay range for this position is $170,000 - $240,000 .  There are several factors taken into consideration in determining base salary, including but not limited to: job-related qualifications, skills, education and experience, as well as job location and the value of other elements of an employee’s total compensation package.
