Senior Publisher – Social Sciences Journals

London Full time

About our Team:

Our STMJ (Science, Technology, and Medical Journals) team publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed research that drives progress across scientific and medical disciplines. We collaborate closely with authors, editors, reviewers, and societies to ensure the integrity and impact of the published work. Through innovation in editorial workflows and publishing technology, we help global research communities discover, evaluate, and disseminate knowledge that advances science and improves lives.

About the Role:

In the Social Sciences Journals team, we are looking for a Senior Publisher with responsibility to oversee a list of international proprietary and society journals in Education, as well as to drive expansion of our networks, partnerships, and market share in line with the overall STM Journals strategy and objectives.

The role also calls for someone who can be innovative and creative to drive the growth and development of the Research Elements title, Societal Impacts.  This has huge potential and to realise this we are looking for someone who is prepared to experiment and look beyond the regular journal management processes.

To excel in this position, you understand the importance of maintaining a strong network both with and beyond current Elsevier editors, authors, and societies. Due to your experience within the publishing industry globally, you can also easily participate in complex industry discussions with high level stakeholders, taking a leading role in connecting with key (institutional, society, funder) stakeholders relevant to Social Sciences.

Responsibilities:

  • Market awareness: You should stay up to date with market developments, to identify and map market needs and business opportunities.

  • Portfolio strategy: Combining market knowledge and data analysis, develop a portfolio strategy that will deliver on STMJ targets and to ensure your portfolio remains fully competitive.

  • Portfolio development: Manage content growth organically and by (title) acquisition as well as managing innovation of content formats and content extensions and channels. Pro-actively push commercial boundaries, translating growth opportunities and customer needs into concrete products and revenues.

  • Relationship building: Stay in close contact with editors and editorial boards within journal portfolio, and engage with stakeholders across the research communities, including research institutes, societies, and funding bodies.

  • Teamwork and mentoring: you will need to work closely with team members and other publishing colleagues to help deliver on collaborative projects and goals. You will act as a role model within the team and help to coach others to success.

  • Participate in projects that are run across STMJ and contribute to projects within Elsevier that require STMJ representation. This could be relevant for the particular department, related to a pilot for a new product, service or business model or even to improving certain processes within our organization.

Requirements:

  • Academic degree/PhD; in the Social Sciences is not essential but can be an advantage.

  • Relevant STM publishing experience, including experience in open access and working with Societies, with a proven track record of setting and realising goals, and of making a difference to a programme.

  • Excellent networking and communication skills, in English.

  • Ability to adapt to change, handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and work equally well collaboratively or independently with colleagues and customers at different levels, in different locations, and from different cultures, in a deadline-oriented environment.

  • Data-driven mindset and a keen interest in new online developments.

  • Financial and commercial awareness, with strategic awareness and eye for business development.

  • Results-oriented with a strong can-do attitude.

  • Willingness to travel internationally (on average 2-4 trips per year).
