In close partnership with our merchant, sourcing, and cross-functional partners, you’ll drive brand cohesion and continuity, ensuring that our products align with merchant line plans, assortment strategies, price points, and overall creative direction.

As a Sr Designer, Furniture & Lighting, you will:
Lead Owned Brand product design and development for furniture and lighting categories, working under direction from design leadership to achieve overall product strategy and merchant objectives. You will design full lines that support specific categories, brands, or guest segments, leveraging deep expertise in 3D design, materials, construction, and manufacturing.


You will be accountable for and lead all stages of the Furniture & Lighting PD&D process, which includes:
Product Design & Development

  • Drive and lead product research, concepting, and line development for furniture and lighting.
  • Translate guest insights, trend direction, and business strategies into differentiated product solutions.
  • Create compelling design concepts through 3D modeling, rendering, hand sketching, rapid iterative ideation, and AI-assisted visualization.
  • Develop and refine designs with attention to scale, proportion, ergonomics, form language, materials, finishes, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Partner with sourcing and technical design to ensure design intent is maintained through all development stages.

Trend & Industry Expertise

  • Serve as a category expert in furniture, lighting, materials, finishes, construction techniques, and global manufacturing processes.
  • Identify and forecast emerging category, brand, or guest segment trends.
  • Shop global and domestic markets to research trends, competitive sets, and new design directions.
  • Travel to vendor partners and factories for development, sampling, and execution alignment.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Collaboration

  • Drive brand cohesion by partnering across the Home Design organization to ensure continuity and consistency.
  • Collaborate closely with technical design, sourcing, engineering, and merchant teams to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve product issues.
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with internal and external partners throughout the design and development lifecycle.
  • Mentor Associate Designers and Designers, supporting their growth and fostering a collaborative team environment.

About you

  • Four-year degree in Industrial Design, Furniture Design, Interior Design, Fine Arts, or related field—or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of professional design experience, preferably in furniture, lighting, or related 3D physical product categories.
  • Advanced skills in 3D modeling and rendering tools (e.g., Rhino, SolidWorks, KeyShot, Blender, or similar).
  • Strong rapid sketching and visualization skills, including ability to use AI tools for fast iterative concepting.
  • Deep understanding of materials, finishes, furniture/lighting construction, and large-scale product manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Strong commercial awareness and ability to apply market research and trend insights.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while also succeeding in highly collaborative environments.
  • Ability to deliver creative, innovative, and cost-effective design solutions aligned to business needs.
  • Robust knowledge of end-to-end product development processes.

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
