As we continue to grow and evolve in the dynamic landscape of data protection, privacy, AI governance, we are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Data Protection and Privacy Senior Counsel to join our Legal Compliance team. This role will directly report to the Company’s Chief Compliance Officer and play a pivotal role in ensuring the highest standards of data protection and ethical privacy practices across our global operations—while embracing our commitment to operational excellence, logic‑based decision‑making, and making legal compliance clear, easy, and actionable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strongly contribute to the continuous development and improvement of Agilent's data protection, privacy and AI governance program, including taking ownership of policy update and review, ensuring compliance with global data protection, privacy and AI regulations such as GDPR, EU Data Act, EU AI Act, and other relevant laws.
  • Partner with the Information Security and Information Technology teams to implement best practices for management and protection of confidential and personal data and to develop appropriate policies and standards
  • Provide expert legal counsel on data protection, privacy and artificial intelligence matters to various internal stakeholders, including senior management, IT, product teams and business units. For example, advise on use of new technologies involving AI and on integration of AI features into products.
  • Support product teams in applying privacy by design and integrating AI ethically into products, and in developing and launching privacy collateral for customers and partners
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of emerging technologies and their legal implications, providing strategic guidance to ensure ethical data protection, privacy and AI practices within the company.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess and mitigate data protection risks associated with AI applications and data processing activities.
  • Conduct regular data protection impact assessments (DPIAs), including risk assessments of AI, and oversee the implementation of appropriate safeguards to mitigate identified risks.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in data protection, privacy and AI regulations, advising the company on necessary adjustments to policies and practices.
  • Support legally privileged review of information security incidents, ensuring timely and effective communication with regulatory authorities and affected individuals. This requires close partnership and alignment with Information Security & Risk Management.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees on data protection, privacy and responsible use of AI.
  • Support the Chief Compliance Officer in managing data protection audits and regulatory inquiries, ensuring thorough documentation and compliance.
  • Foster a culture of privacy and data protection awareness and responsible use of AI across the organization, promoting a proactive approach to data governance.
  • Review and advise on data protection, privacy cybersecurity contractual terms and audits, partnering closely with Information Security and Risk Management. Support the drafting of necessary contractual terms and templates on data protection, privacy and AI alongside Legal Department colleagues as required, creating effective and comprehensive negotiation playbooks.
  • Performance Metrics: Support the tracking of key performance metrics such as regulatory compliance rate, incident response time, training completion rate, stakeholder satisfaction, and continuous improvement initiatives to measure the effectiveness of data protection, privacy and AI practices.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a law degree (LLB or equivalent) and be a qualified solicitor or barrister in the relevant jurisdiction (England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Republic of Ireland), with an active practising certificate and membership in good standing with the applicable professional body (e.g., SRA, Law Society of Scotland, Law Society of Northern Ireland, or Law Society of Ireland).
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in data protection, privacy law, and AI-related legal matters, preferably within a multinational corporation or a reputable law firm.
  • In-depth knowledge of global data protection and cyber security regulations, including GDPR, PIPL, EU AI Act, EU Data Act, EU Cyber Resilience Act and similar legislation.
  • Understanding of regulations applicable to the Life Sciences industry.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing data protection, privacy and AI policies and procedures, conducting risk assessments, and managing information security incidents.
  • Strong understanding of AI technologies, their ethical implications, and related legal frameworks.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to provide practical and strategic legal advice.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and senior management.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Experience in using and managing workflows and maintaining documentation in privacy management systems such as OneTrust is required.
  • Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) and other relevant certifications is a plus.
