As a Senior Principal SW Engineer - Backend, you act as a visionary leader who defines the strategic direction of an entire engineering field. Your work focuses on solving open-ended, highly ambiguous problems that have no clear precedent, and whose resolution delivers massive, long-term business outcomes for our portfolio of products that helps people with the most precious thing they have — their health.

Own the technical vision and architecture for all Mobile Backend services within the Patient Insights Software chapter.

We are looking for a highly seasoned, motivated individual to act as the backend strategist and expert for our domain. Your career focus is on driving architectural and organizational excellence across the organization and mentoring the next generation of top-tier engineers

Essential skills for this mission:

You bring Advanced mastery to every skill listed, leveraging 10+ years of experience in high-impact backend environments.

  • Visionary Leadership & Strategic Thinking: Define and drive the ultimate technical direction for Mobile Backend engineering. Act as the Backend Strategist, defining long-term stack development roadmaps and future-proof architectures specific to high-performance, resilient mobile service delivery to answer critical portfolio business needs.

  • Organizational & Architectural Excellence: Drive culture and mindset for engineering across the entire chapter. Act as the ultimate technical authority, defining and implementing systematic processes for high domain competence and architectural integrity (especially regarding data integrity, security, and scalability for patient data) across major organizational segments and business units, setting precedents for technical excellence and complexity.

  • Problem Solving & Impact: Solve highly ambiguous, complex problems that have no clear precedent, delivering systemic solutions that enable large-scale platform development and massive business impact.

  • Global Reference Point: Represent deep external expertise and act as a technical reference point globally for core backend technologies (e.g., Java 17+, Spring, Hibernate, PostgreSQL, AWS/Cloud) and advanced mobile backend patterns/methodologies (e.g., secure APIs, low-latency architecture, offline data synchronization).

  • Mentorship & Coaching: Mentor and coach Backend Engineers, cultivating a culture of technical mastery, systematic approach, and candid Feedback & Coaching, and actively mentor/coach across the wider engineering organization to raise the overall technical competency base.

  • Collaboration & Conflict Management: Expert ability to manage conflict constructively and collaborate across functions to ensure organizational and architectural excellence. Collaborate closely with Business and Leaders to translate complex technical risks and opportunities into business impacts, ensuring strategic alignment of deep technical initiatives.

  • Great written and verbal communication in English.

  • You are either an EU citizen or hold a valid Austrian work permit.

Bonus skills:

  • Experience with medical, security, and privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).

  • Acting as a trusted technical advisor in the diabetes or comparable health industries.

Your deep technical expertise will define the system strategy and engineering implementation across our entire technology stack—from native mobile development interfaces to infrastructure-as-code in our cloud environment. This mastery is crucial for ensuring the technical implementation meets the stringent requirements of medical software, including security, medical risk management, regulatory compliance, and audit readiness. Your influence extends to direct engagement with our users, customers, and partners, ensuring every high-level technical decision is built upon a profound understanding of the daily challenges faced by those living with diabetes and the unique needs of global healthcare systems.

In Austria, we have a legal obligation to disclose the minimum salary according to our collective agreement, which is gross EUR 3.843  - per month for this position. But! Rest assured, we offer amazing competitive compensation packages which take into consideration current market trends, therefore you can expect a higher offer that reflects your experience level.
