The Senior Power Trader will maximize value from cogeneration assets and broader ERCOT consumption. This role will actively manage volatility and margin targets, focusing on spark spread optimization and creating incremental value. The trader will operate within a disciplined risk framework (limits, governance, reporting), partnering closely with operations and risk/control functions to ensure compliance. This is a growth role expected to help develop and scale financial power trading capabilities over time to expand the organization’s value capture toolkit.
Act as a market intelligence provider and proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders to pursue opportunities.
Contribute to a high quality of shared understanding of market opportunities, trends, and value potential
Establish meaningful commercial relationships with key power generator personal
Analysis of analytical themes across US power markets, including the identification and impact of fundamental changes
Represent Marathon on trade associations to advocate for MPC’s interests in the Power industry and to also act as a conduit to internal stakeholders
Observing and strictly complying with all regulatory guidelines
Build and manage a power optimization tool for MPC’s power assets across the US (ERCOT experience preferred)
Streamline and enhance the product array and functionality of the Power desk, including management of asset optimization and all facets included: forecasting, intraday trading, balancing
Responsible for the execution and maintenance of fundamental power market models
Articulate a Point-of-View with clear risk/reward metrics
Work with other supporting functions (Regulatory, Finance, Legal, Compliance, HSSE) as applicable
Coaching & educating colleagues, including those on other teams
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree required.
Five (5) or more years of experience in Trading or Marketing including profit/loss responsibility for Product Trading, Contract Negotiation and Scheduling (rail, truck, vessel and pipe).
Preferred Experience:
Prioritization skills, distinguishing between urgent, important and essential
Experience in energy, finance and/or trading industries
Knowledge of the US Power market fundamentals and intermediate knowledge of US Gas markets
Knowledge of the regulatory environment
Advanced commercial contracting skills
Experience negotiating with utilities
Market Analysis/Planning
Strong track record of analytical skills and insights
Excellent written and verbal communication skills as report preparation and subsequent interaction with traders are a significant aspect of this role
Ability to analyze, compare, contrast, evaluate and judge with ease
This role requires an ability and willingness to quickly understand and act upon commercial opportunities, often under significant time pressure
