Job Description

Motorola Solutions’ Fixed Video hardware team is seeking an experienced Senior Optical Designer to join our optics group.  You’ll have the opportunity to steer the end-to-end product design and ensure high quality of our broad portfolio of next generation cameras.

Responsibilities:

  • Lens Design: drive lens selection or custom design through third-party suppliers
  • Camera Validation: simulation, optimization and evaluation of lens modules, prototypes, and full production camera assembly
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: work closely with mechanical, electrical and firmware teams on integration of the lens/sensor modules onto our camera platforms
  • Transfer to Production: Develop alignment standards, test jigs and automation routines for factory assembly
  • Illumination and Stray Light Analysis: Design optimization, testing and mitigation of stray light
  • Documentation: Maintain records of design decisions, test reports and troubleshooting
  • Hybrid work requirement

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • 4+ years of experience in optics, physics, imaging, or related technical field
  • Strong understanding of geometrical optics, aberration theory and MTF testing
  • Technical understanding of cameras/photography and design considerations for a security application
  • Strong written documentation skills and ability to communicate optical concepts to non-engineers
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks and projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in the area of lens or camera design
  • Experience with lens design/illumination software such as Code V, Zemax, LightTools, TracePro, Fred or similar
  • Experience writing scripts for computer vision, automation and analysis in Matlab, Python or equivalent with or without AI copilot
  • Experience with stray light analysis, optical coatings and related design considerations
  • Familiarity with active alignment of lenses and optical metrology instruments

This position is based in Vancouver, BC and the candidate must reside in the Greater Vancouver Area as you will be required to go into the office on a hybrid work schedule.

The base salary for this position in British Columbia is 110,000 - 120,000 CAD depending on experience.
